England vs. Slovenia

London_Calling

Pleasant and unpatronising
I'm still fucking furious but will let it go soon. Please see notes:

Hart

Johnson – Upson – Terry - ArseCole

Lennon – Carrick – Barry – J.Cole

Crouch - Rooney

Hart: Why? Fuck this pretend nonsense that one of them is clearly ‘better’ in some way than the other two. I’d rotate them – giving them each at least a game – until one of them demonstrates they deserve to keep the shirt

Upson: Why? Carragher is banned – thank fuck – so it’s between England’s 6th and 7th choice centre backs Upson and Dawson and I know Dawson isn’t good enough. Like the ‘keepers, at that stage it hardly matters and you’re splitting hairs.

Gerrard and Lampard: Neither of them will ever reproduce what they do in the Premiership because the conditions cannot be replicated for England. They may have chunks of their respective club sides built around them, they may have compliant and submissive partners on the pitch at home, they may have formed ‘important’ relationships with key strikers at their clubs, however, none of that matters a flying fuck in an England shirt and so they offer a fraction of their club ‘form’. In combination with each other, even less than a fraction. Individually they are millstones to the cause, collectively an iceberg.

Carrick and Barry: Why? Unusually intelligent players both used to putting the cause ahead of the individual. Capable of operating in a unit rather than the unit playing for them, thrive in partnerships, understand team dynamics

Crouch: Why? Did you see poor Emile when he had the ball at his feet and facing the opposition goal? That’s why, well part of why. But thanks for the performance vs. the USA Emile - that's the one to remember you by

Also, Heskey was by a long shot our best player both against the USA and last night.

If you can't see that you're blind to football.

caveat - ashley cole aside.

More or less sensible.

On the less: I think that years of fretting about the Spurs centre backs have blinded you to Dawson's qualities. Would you really swap him for Upson? Also, SWP did actually look rather better than Lennon yesterday. And James was probably the best of an appalling bunch, so it would be capricious to chuck him.

Every important game?

He's done fuck all for United for at least a year.

In terms of team dynamics, fluidity, using and occupying space, making the entire pitch part of the game - and much more, Carrick is a footballing genius. You won't ever see that but, rest assured, your opinion is important to us so please stay on the line.

No, he's an above average player who shines in the Premier League because he does something that English players don't generally do well - passing.

However the rest of his game has become painfully deficient in the last year.

I don't really care between Upson or Dawson - I'd like one of them to rise about the limits of their talent but I'd also like to bang Gabby. In truth, I can't bear Dawson's inane grin

SWP was given different instructions to Lennon, the game had changed. He had no defensive job - exposing Johnson but what can you do at that stage. Can't compare, imo

Sticking with rotating the keepers until one shows some ability

Excellent - let the hype/hope/praying/resignation for Wednesday start here. ;)
I wonder if Capello will just tinker or get stuck in with some wholesale changes...

Lennon was pants too.

Back to the very worst of his early Spurs days.

It looked like he didn't even have a brief.

Carrick had a terrible season at United. But selecting him for the Slovenia game? Well why not. We cannot get any worse than we are at the moment. I would defo drop lampard. Whoever comes in from him will do better. Frank is not an international player.

Not an international player?

Fuck me, that's moronic.

Some players only thrive in club sides where - and when - particular dynamics are allowed to emerge. Others have games that better allow them to hold their form in makeshift (national) sides.

It's to do with a lot of things. But if adapting your game loses you your game, you're of no value in the makeshift world of international football.

Agree except Lampard for Carrick.

Make Terry captain again.

I don't like Terry but he did give the team drive.
Capello could blame it all on Gerrard.
If they win he's a hero for taking a touch decision.
they lose he gets £6m.

We should thank our lucky stars we're not already dead and buried and winning the group is still well within our grasp (somehow!). As for the personnel, it's irrelevant. Last night we weren't shit because of the personnel, we were shit because nobody could complete a ten yard pass, their decision making was abysmal, nobody was moving and looking for the ball... all of that's psychological...

Quite right. I was coming on here to say exactly this. England were extraordinarily lucky to have put up that level of performance against one of the weakest two-three teams in the finals. France were not so lucky, and Mexico would surely have stuffed England too.

Yes, but Mexico played well the other night, and if England had given them the ball as easily as they gave it to Algeria, the likes of Dos Santos would have created and taken chances.

all we can really do is cross our fingers and hope that for some reason that england are struggling to get grip on this tournament, and that if we hang in there things will click and they'll improve. I don't think drastic changes of personnel or formation are going to have an effect, unless we're identifying people who's heads are too fucked to contribute?

Yep, movement in particular was dire last night.

Drop Rooney he has been absolutely dire in both games.
His rant against the fans was probably his attempt to deflect just how crap he was against Algeria.

Ps one tip for fabio who ever you play up front make them stay on the halfway line when we are defending set pieces cos at least when we hoof it away from the box (hopefully) it will be in the general direction of a team mate rather than an aimlesspunt away.

capello should have sent them of a huge piss up session afterwards and fuck the media -Im sure a few home truths and maybe a bit of a scuffle would have been part of the fun but would have cleared the air for the next day.

a slagging and an early night wont sort the Ingerland team out

speaking as a neutral obv.

Joe Cole needs to be selected, because he's more likely to score or assist than Rooney is at the moment.

Lampard and Heskey need to sit this match out on the bench.
