England V Tunisia 19.00 Hrs Monday 18 th June (Volgograd Arena)

I watched it in a bar in Ithaca where nobody cared except me and the kabbess. We were unimpressed. England had the subtlety of an iron bar, no movement off the ball and crumbled the moment they were put under pressure. It bodes. Mark my words —it bodes.

Bodes Well.

Could have been about four up in half an hour. Tore them to pieces for that time. Tons of crosses from the byline lots of bodies in great positions (then unable to shoot of course). One piece of crap indiscipline at the back and a couple of other wobbles but goalie barely had a thing to do. Robbed of two utterly blatant pens. Great subs brought fresh energy and ideas to the final few minutes resulting in a winner.

Aside from that yeah disappointing.

my issue is, this isnt normal disribution going on here, this is fat tailed- they could actually do it

England ranked 12th, Tunisia 21st. Hardly David and Goliath.
Wait, so suddenly these world ranking are something we should pay a lot of attention to? Gotcha. No, you're right, It was an amazing victory. England were awesome.

Ah come on. They were awesome first half hour. One poor moment at the back (and they'll need to cut those out against better teams), otherwise not troubled at all, made Tunisia look like a very poor team. I loved the way they pressed high. Sure it petered out for a large part of the second half, but that winner had been coming for a few minutes before it was scored. They both didn't run out of ideas and didn't start trying desperate stuff. I can think of England teams in the past in which someone like Rooney or Gerrard would have started trying to do miracles on their own and failing after things fell flat for a bit. This team played as a team from start to finish. And the ref was a disgrace but they didn't let them get to them. Very impressed.

Having not watched it and having entirely failed to be enlightened by this thread, were England shit or not?

The much repeated idea that England were 'patient' was a bit worrying. Until the substitutions they were just playing it around, trying to pass their way through. Nobody taking players on, very little variation. Rashford wasn't really a game changer, but he did at least provide a bit of penetration, Ruben LC was better. 2nd goal was all about lack of marking as much as anything. Anyway, looks like they'll get out of the group. Got to drop Sterling now though.

They started brightly but then slumped back into classic England and in the end only just scrambled a win. It was not a great match by any measure, but they managed three points.
