England v Iceland, 8pm (ITV)

Iceland: Population 323,000
England: Population 53,000,000

Iceland: Professional football clubs 0
England: Professional football clubs - loads

Though they did qualify as runners up from a group containing Holland, Czech and Turkey. And they weren't far off being group winners.

They also performed very well in the group stages, including a draw with Portugal.

There's no doubt that they're a minnow team - especially given their population - but I'm not entirely comfortable with the attitude in some quarters that losing to them is somehow shameful. They're clearly a difficult side to beat, and I'm not looking forward to France playing them in the next round.

Last one I enjoyed was the Korea Japan world cup. The 'golden generation' was nothing of the sort. The late 90s team could be called a golden generation getting us to the Euro semi finals and quarter finals and having those epic games with Argentina in France and Japan, the Lampard, Gerard, Rooney team never achieved anything. There are a lot of good players but they did not play with any direction

Sure...Maybe because I was a touch younger then, but no matter how on-paper-rubbish the available players may have been, the Spring in even-numbered years was always spent thinking 'what if...'.

It's just not even a pipe dream. A figment of amusement for envious bitter ABE's to froth over, and a chance for everyone's inner jingo singalong baritone to get an airing. Just a shame I suppose. Are playgrounds these days (years) full of wide eyed juniors thinking maybe, just maybe...?

England's worst result since 1973 when they were papped out by Poland signalling the end of Sir Alf Ramsey.

Lots of "England back to 1973" Brexit parallels but I can't be arsed.

It truly was shit, especially second half. The Rashford cameo only showed what sort of mentality the rest were lacking.
Rashford should have been on from the start. He had the energy and vitality that was missing from almost all of England's mildly interested miskickers.

Or at the very least he comes on with half an hour to go. It was clear by then that England weren't going anywhere. I can only think that Hodgson wasn't brave enough to pull off Rooney.

Rashford made an impact because he has pace and was fresh . The Portuguese in the bar asked me why he couldn't pass. If he'd been in from the start he would have been found out and become another Sterling .
Second half we were simply to slow in moving the ball, fowards had no movement and just waited for a cross or long ball , passing lacked any zip or pace and we lacked creativity . Wiltshire and Rooney in particular were very disappointing .

Kane was fucking useless.

Wislshire hadn't shown any signs of recovering for the injury (ETA injury lay-off I mean) that I hope was the reason he was gash in the last outing so was surprised he was first sub. of course Roy watched the training. I kind of feel for him, even if he is somehow shitter than I thought he can't be solely responsible for that.
