Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion

<<<<<Post contains some very minor spoilage - nothing about main Q line though>>>>>>

For lockpicks either join the thieve's guild or the Dark Brotherhood. The dark brotherhood is a little easier to join - all you need to do is brutally murder an NPC and they'll visit you next time you sleep. Thieve's guild involves bribing/charming until they tell you where to meet Grey Fox then a quest. Both organisations will sell you lockpicks.

Untill you slaughter the entire dark brotherhood organisation (that you know of) in a childish fit of rage that is. :(

well. I didnt want to spoil it for you :) , theres a book on lockpicking out there somewhere that explains how to make it much easier....I use spells now, my days of playing with tumblers is over

That's the rub, see. My alteration is only 34, and I need 50 to cast an open Average lock spell. And at my Level, locked chests in dungeons are nearly all Average now :( My lockpick skill ain't much better. Guess I need to buff up a bit...

ok **SPOILER ALERT**

Now, I havent tested this out myself as I dont need lockpicking anymore. What I used to do is save before every attempt and load up if I ran out of lockpicks. Now, you notice how the speed of the tumbler varies? and its best to make an attempt when the tumbler rises really slowly? well, normally its random. Theres a book on lockpicking which details how the best lockpickers work their art...they equip a torch. Apparantly, if you have a torch in your hand when you lockpick, the speed of the tumblers isnt random, instead it may be something like 2 fast, 2 slow, 2 slowest etc. Therefore making lockpicking much easier :)

I have a technical question someone might be able to help with: When I turn down the music volume in Options nothing happens, it just keeps playing. And when someone speaks it's very, very broken up, like static. I have a Soundblaster Live! 5.1 so there shouldn't be any problems. Thanks. :)

Sounds very like a driver problem. Head over to www.creative.com and get the latet drivers.

I didn't need a lockpick after all, I finally found one in a dungeon, couldn't resist a 'very easy' chest, broke it, screamed cos I hadn't saved, kept going in the dungeon, found 3 more, hurried back to locked chest, opened it to find a crappy sword, screamed, looked around and found what I'd needed all along.

I've got to a bit of the main quest that is absolutely rock hard, this character I have to fight must be about 10 levels above me, he kicks my ass in 3 moves. Now levelling up.

The mobs in the game level up as you do so thats always going to be a tough fight :)

I had to turn down the difficulty level on the Kvatch fight.

Finished it at 4am this morning (by finished I mean the dark brotherhood, mage guild and the main quest) pretty good, piece of piss once you can make your own spells and your skills are fairly high though, probably could have strolled through the thief guild will little in the way of bother.

Still couldnt get into that bloody orrery though, whatever it is.

Crashes for lots of people if you try and change the options in the game, best to change the options on the intro screen before loading it up.

Also check my posts if you using a graphics card without Pixel Shader 2.0, not that its easy to find out, went out the weekend to buy a Pixel Shader 2.0 card, and couldn't find one that said on the damn box..Pixel Shader 2.0, so how the fuck you supposed to know it is or isn't is beyond me.

As far as I know, the box will say 'DirectX 9.0c Compatible' or somesuch if it supports Pixel Shader 2.0 (I think this covers a whole host of other stuff too). Not 100% sure on that though, so might be an idea to confirm that with the person in the shop...

You could try an alternative launcher called Oldblivion. It gets the game to use 1.0 pixel shaders, thus allowing it to run on some unsupported graphics cards.

I've used it to get Oblivion to run on my Radeon 9200 card, albeit with some graphical glitches.

Details can be found at: http://www.stg-gaming.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=102&posts=1&start=1

May try this, or wait till I get a new computer...so the experience is fresh....oh decisions decisions

I would wait. The sumptuous graphics are one of the things that make the game great. For now, I'd install morrowind and get used to the Elder Scrolls game style - see if you like fighting, magic or sneaking (or combinations thereof)

Is there a guide available online anywhere? I don't really understand some of the stuff and for some reason *cough* I don't have any kind of manual. Not anything with spoilers or a walkthrough - just the basics about how to use various things or how the stats and skills work.

I have scans of the manual at work TJ. send me your email and I'll send em you tomorrow.

I wish i had the money to upgrade my PC to play this - actually, i probably wouldn't even have the time to play it at the minute :(

Excellent game, but 22 hours into it & I'm getting frequent (every 10 mins or so) crashes (crash as in machine reboots)!
Overheating issue?

Sounds like one. What make is your graphics card?

Full specs (don't mean a great deal to me tbh). . .

AMD64 ™ 3500+ “Venice” CPU
1Gb OCZ Dual Channel PC3200 DDR
Asus A8N nForce 4 SLi Motherboard
160Gb Seagate 7200 RPM Drive
Sapphire Radeon X850 XT PE 256Mb VGA (Running two 19" flat screens off it)
Philips 1640 16x Dual layer
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2
1GigaBit Ethernet
FireWire
USB 2.0
Hardware Firewall
Antec TruePower 480w P.S.U.

That computer should have no problems.

Try turning the graphics options right down and play for a while. If it still crashes, we can probably rule out overheating.

Have you got the latest drivers from www.ati.com ?

Good idea on turning down the gfx settings
Will update drivers over the w/e
Many thanks Crispy.

You should have some temperature monitoring software, if not then there are some ATI tools that will let you see how hot the card is running...

If it's crashing because of graphics card issues then you should see similar problems in other graphics intensive roles, RTHDRBL for example.
