Egypt anti-government protests grow

Come on, you really think troops are going to open the (USA Patent Pending) cannons on the people, after all this?

The world is watching with 200:1 lens power, never mind the overhead spy kit in space.

It's over. Uncle Sam will never permit such flagrant nazi-esque actions if they're on prime time TV.

My take on it from that stale broadcast is just a crusty dictator saying "sleep on it".

He knows he is fucked, he just wanted to wear his best suit for the world just in case someone bothered to make him an obituary tape.

Apologies but some light relief...

He's appealing to the middle classes.

Not really. He's appealing to nationalist sentiment underlined by populist developmentalism. Oldest trick in the book. Problem for him is all classes have been out all week because the polices he's forced on the country damage them all unles they're on the inside of his regime - and very few are.

Yeah. This isn't a closed country. Most of the soldiers are conscripts and they know full well what is happening. I cannot see them turning on the people. I really, really can't. Once Mubarak lost control using the police, he was fucked, same as Ben Ali.

I'm still worried, but I'm a pessamist.

I didn't see Mubarak staying though.

Yes, and where are those sentiments most keenly felt and don't forget the "chaos" bit he emphasised?

Telegraph has this claiming it's all a Yank colour revolution - someone elsewhere said that leaflet reads very much like the ones seen in former Soviet bloc. Bollocks surely? That'd mean coordinating it with Tunisia.
ETA: As I understand, it's true the US has given a few mill to 'democracy' activists, but doubt this is all their cunning plan coming together. Their response would be more together, even if still mealy-mouthed and non-committal.

In terms of how the US maintain their interests, by any means necessary was the point.

The USA have dropped Mubarak like a stone.

Clinton's eyes said it all. It's all over for the craggy faced soldier.

"give me a chance" he says! He's not begging "his people", he's begging for more dollars. He's fucked.

He's just begging – to everyone.

I'm confused. I can't see how the US hasn't dumped him, but if the US has dumped him, I can't see why he is trying to hang on.

I think he might be a bit confused too.

No, I'm putting forward a view that you obviously disagree with, but no substantive reply. Not unexpected.
You put forward a by rote totally cliched view of what you think he's doing that bore no relation whatsoever to what he actually said, which was the exact opposite of trying to play upon class cleavages turning one section of the population against another and instead was based around the concept of national renewal and we're all in it together (did you even bloody listen to it?) - if we pull together we can develop better services jobs etc. The exact opposite of what what you said. As i pointed out in my substantive reply to your original daft post.

He doesn't believe the US has dumped him yet.

He believes his subjects actually love him.

*bless*

I've been commenting on what he said. Why do you always toss about the clichéd attacks? Your interpretation I disagree with. We'll see what transpires?

Pointless, engaging any further with you.

In the midst of all this someone still has a sense of humour:

Joke of the day -- Obama: "Hosni, I think u need to write ur goodbye letter to ur people." Hosni Mubarak: "Why? Where are they going?

My knowledge of the Iranian revolution of '79 and the aftermath is pretty poor

Are there many similarities with Egypt at the mo? My reading is that an Islamic takeover is unlikely. Accurate?
