Egypt anti-government protests grow

My knowledge of the Iranian revolution of '79 and the aftermath is pretty poor

Are there many similarities with Egypt at the mo? My reading is that an Islamic takeover is unlikely. Accurate?

It's not comparable, no. There is no spiritual leader waiting to return from exile, who would be welcomed by large numbers of people. In fact there is no clear leadership to the movement at all. But this is not an Islamic revolution, not in any way. The Islamists have been marginalised almost completely so far, from what I can tell.

There's been a plague of 'the fit policeman' across FB profiles now......shame Athena aren't around any more or he'd give the 'baby bloke' a run for his money.

I don't think so. That speech was the speech of a desperate man, not a man with a plan.

Yep, he didn't say "right that's enough folks, you've had your fun but let me sort shit out", it was more like "erm, this is cool, all the protests, I agree with them, they're good, I'm your man...yeah?"

Americans are still backing him.

"It's our hope that President Mubarak will use this moment..... blah blah blah"

John Kerry on Al J now

:(

US. 'We must support these regimes, because they offer stability'. Ha!

'Great respect for Mubarak.'

'Transitional phase, with US support.'

Too many assumptions made this evening, the narrative got ahead of the reality somewhat. We've been quite unclear on some important aspects of the military presence since it first happened, and certain aspects of the 24 hour news coverage distorted things too. Not all dictators will run away as quickly as the Tunisian one did, far from it. Mubarak is weakened on several important fronts but his demise is not utterly assured quite yet.

I doubt he sent in troops as some sort of con, I assume the primary reason was to safeguard key locations once the police could no longer do anything. Theres been footage of a range of relations between military and the people tonight, and very little clue as to what happened to police that may have changed into civilian clothes. Certain behaviour by military in footage may also have been somewhat misrepresented by commentators. We only know a few facts from a few locations, much more may have happened tonight than we yet know.

Obama: 'Preventing injury and loss of life. Protecting peaceful protesters. Violence and destruction will not lead to the reforms they seek.'

'Suppressing ideas will not make them go away.'

'Committed to work with the Egyptian government.'

Totally mealy mouthed from Obama. 'We will work with the Egyptian govt' to advance the wishes of the Egyptian people. But the wishes of the Egyptian people are for the government to go!
