Dune - dir. Denis Villeneuve

Tbf I don't really care that much as I go to the cinema about 3 times a decade. Although having subtitles annoys me as I can't concentrate on the image and just end up reading.
That’s not everyone’s experience though
Many people can see all that at once (or maybe it is just me?!), so it keeps your eye on the screen more - makes you pay MORE attention, not less.

Are we going to find out why the Baron liked to bathe in an oil tank and why he was into extreme body modification and wafting about floating on a hoverboard attached to a weird black rubber fetishy medicineball?

Also, what was with the weird spider thing in part 1? It’s shown and commented on once. Bet that’s another book detail that they don’t have time to explain in the film. But if so, WHY BOTHER? Is it an Easter Egg reward for the bookwankers for paying attention? Or will it become significant in Part 3?
And why did the Hakkunnons send that insect drone needle thing to assassinate Paul, when they also plan to completely destroy House Atreides and take over Arrakis again? It looks like a typical Bondian unnecessary plot device to provide entertainment rather than story. Bit annoying if this is correct, as there’s lots of story and that’s the sort of thing they should cut out as it doesn’t make sense (to non-bookwankers anyway).

So that the Atreides lads could find the spy built into the wall, illustrating just how fanatical the Harkonens are. Also so we can get a hint about Paul's supernatural abilities.

There's a lot of this sort of thing in Dune, stuff happening to advance the plot rather than because it makes sense.

If you are going to attack an army and stronghold, causing chaos and attacking moral first is a good strategy.

The Harkonnens are a newer great house. They like to shock and appall the stuffy old houses who hide away their bad habits.

What nonsense is this you are spouting?
They are an old house who slowly grew to power through trade before being granted Arrakis (mining).

The Baron is an ultra-hedonist and an ultra-glutton.
He’ll indulge in any pleasure he can think up, men, women, boys, girls, food, drugs, sadism and politics. Politics is a joy to him. Using and abusing his power a joy.

This has led to him being ultra obese and diseased. Twisted in mind and body.

If it wasn’t for the properties of spice, which the wealthy use to extend life, he’d probably be dead.

p.s. I’d expect better from someone named Idaho. Duncan must be rolling in his clone vat.

I'd recommend you don't read the prequel stories by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson then :D :(

So was the assassination attempt on Paul prior to promising the emperor not to kill him?

The Baron's oily bath was to counter the effects of the poison attack I thought.
It’s to make him look evil.
It’s dramatic effect.
Nothing to do with the books or plot.

It’s given rise to lots of theories. Pick whichever one you like best.

I prefer the theory that it’s for buoyancy.
Coz he’s so heavy now he needs the weight lifted off his body at all times and he can’t wear suspensors whilst submerged in liquid.

Someone says something about him not being over the effects when the bath is first shown, so thought they were making a link.

I'm just writing from what I vaguely remember from a brief bit of heretics of dune.

To be honest writers can contradict themselves.

e.g. House Harkonen are a new house who in previous books had an ancient feud with the Atreides.

Well which is it?

Nope. that wasn't mentioned in the book. Something they added in the movie as part of the word building. Weird for wierdness' sake.

The assassination attempt was more a distraction and not expected to succeed. So the Atredies would be less likely to uncover the important plot with the traitor Yueh, and have less time to prepare for the military assault.

One of many distractions I should say. They were doing lots to keep the Atredies on the back foot.

A very successful distraction as the Duke kept banging on about it.

Everyone is going nuts about this. How come it's getting so much more momentum than the first one?
Because the first one ramped up the expectation. And I think it’s one of those books that a lot of people read when impressionable
