Dune - dir. Denis Villeneuve

From Wikipedia:

Based on:
Sisterhood of Dune
by Brian Herbert
Kevin J. Anderson

It'll be shit.
The logic doesn’t necessarily follow as some of the best adaptations have been on mediocre work and vice versa. But you’re probably right. It probably still look amazing though. And there’s some heavyweights in the cast and crew.

Not just based on their shite books, but KJA has a producer credit (not a token executive producer) implying that he’s actually been involved actively.

It’ll be a stinker.

I watched thrice now and I have many gripes and praises but the one thats swirling around my head this afternoon is that the films don't emphasise how scarce and how important water is on Dune nor the fremen drive for an ecological change

Doesn't ecological change come later, it's only hinted at in Dune?

(On 4th book so far...)

The ecological change does come later but the value of water is stressed highly in Dune.
The palm trees, the greenhouse, the stillsuits, the taking of water from corpses and other examples I forget right now.

The dream of Liet was one that the fremenwould die for and Liet was pretty much treated like a holy prophet. Something that was skipped right past in the films.

These are the sort of things that only book wankers complain about tbh.
If you are going to translate an epic to screen then translate an epic.
If you just want a wankstain action film then fuck off and write an action film. Just saying.

It def seemed to me like water was an extremely scarce and precious resource in the film, but then I haven’t read the book so obv can’t compare the degree of emphasis.

I kinda get the annoys that some things will be changed or left out when it comes to adaptations, but it's no big deal.

Roadside Picnic, for example, and Stalker are radically different but still both favourites...
Fair enough. To be honest Pride and Prejudice could be improved with a few more car chases and less women banging on about relationships. So I get where your coming from.

Finally got round to seeing Part Two last night, at the BFI IMAX (after the first thing I said coming out of Part One was "I wish I'd seen that at the IMAX").

Lots of thoughts, certainly not all 100% good, but overall, didn't disappoint. Properly cinematic scale, very enjoyable, would go again. By golly, Villeneuve knows how to compose a shot.

Will be interested to see how it does on the small screen, but I watched Part One on my TV yesterday morning and it was still bloody good, so I have hopes that Part Two will work just as well.
