Driving Standards

Looks like the silly fucker was done last October, but owing to be an old Etonian was too fucking stupid to realis that you must pay within 14 days, so has escalated to £510 and 3 points (speed course must, if offered, be accepted when you get the NIP).

Still, the old boy clearly wasn't paying attention, even less so as this is his 'local' speed camera, and not exactly hidden from view

Whenever I've travelled on that road, pretty much 100% of traffic around me has always being going above 20 mph. But most drivers have the common the sense to decelerate to 21- 22 mph as they go past the camera, before returning to their previous, appropriate safe speed for the road and conditions in question.

Your own post contains clear evidence that motorists should not be empowered to decide for themselves what an appropriate and safe speed is. As for the conditions, they include a 20mph speed limit. So drivers should expect to encounter traffic moving at 20mph. Which means the safe thing to do is to drive no faster than 20mph.

All these fucking vroom vroom arseholes acting like they're sensing humidity and road surface temperature, calculating their stopping distance with a slide rule then driving at precisely 37.6 mph as the conditions demand. Bollocks they are. Stupid cunts who speed are exactly the same stupid cunts in rain, snow, fog, whatever. The conditions are the same everywhere and always; don't fucking speed. Neither you nor wherever you think you need to be are that fucking important.

Your post appears to suggest that the 20 mph speed limit, or indeed any speed limit in this country, was dediced upon by a body of impartial, unbiased, and non-political independent experts and boffins, rather than politicians.

This is blatantly bollocks of the highest order, course. Unless you actually tell me you believe that for almost the entire lifespan of speed limits in this country, every single government and local authority and their road safety experts in charge of speed limits were so absolutely fucking useless at their jobs, they grossly overestimated the maximum safe speed on urban roads by an incredible 50% for nearly a hundred years, until the current generation of experts luckily arrived and showed all previous generations the error of their ways.

We either have speed limits, imperfect though that system may be, or we let the lowest common denominator decide what's safe and what isn't. The cost of letting every sad little dickhead in an overpriced German saloon make their own decisions about speed would be counted in innocent lives. And what's in the plus column? Sad little dickheads will still be sad little dickheads, they'll just get to whatever dickhead behaviour they're heading towards a bit quicker. The ones who don't crash and die anyway.

Car people,
My jimny just got an orange warning light picture of an engine , and felt .. juddery & weird. I am about half hour from home & have to be at computer by 4 but I do not try to ignore & drive home do I , have to call the AA?

It's the engine management light, if it was red it would be a serious issue and you should stop immediately and call the AA. If it's orange/yellow then it means a generalised fault on the engine such as blocked airflow/ignition fault/exhaust. It is safe to drive shortish distances such as going home but you should get it checked ASAP.

How far do you have to go? That light means something's amiss with the engine, could just be misfiring, could be more serious.

I’ve called the AA now. Felt scary to drive even though just half hour from home. My normal garage can’t help til next week & im supposed to drive to airport on Sunday

This car I think doesn’t have red for serious problem instead it has flashing , which is what I got : (

You've still got that thing? :(

What you see there is the "This car is shit. Change it for something else" warning light. Ignore it at your peril.

Any ideas on how the fuck someone could do this? Never mind why?

I reckon they have a theory. Rogue car lifter.

Sgt Brian Dickson said: "Anyone with any information about this theft is urged to contact police."
He added: "We are particularly keen to hear from anyone with dash-cam or CCTV footage which may show the car being transported or abandoned."

What’s the expected etiquette for motorists and cyclists at pinch points, esp ones with traffic islands?
I regularly ride up a long hill, with a 40mph limit. Unfortunately many cars exceed the speed limit, but even when they’re not, I take the precaution of taking the middle of the lane maybe 100m before the pinch point, to prevent close passes while I’m cycling between the traffic island and the pavement.
Occasionally I’ll get a beep or a mouthful of abuse for doing this, but today someone actually stopped and very aggressively remonstrated with me for riding dangerously. He was swearing loads in front of his kids and telling me I deserved to get run off my bike. I thought it best to stay quiet and move on, but now I’m stewing about it. I’m in the right though, aren’t I?

No.

Yes, sounds right, it's hard to know exactly how close/far away from the pinch point you should move into the middle but you are right to do to do prevent a close pass. The motorist is a dick head who doesn't know the rules.

There is also new guidance for people cycling at junctions with no separate facilities.

The code recommends that people cycling should proceed as if they were driving a vehicle where there are no separate cyclist facilities. This includes positioning themselves in the centre of their chosen lane, where they feel able to do this safely. This is to:
  • make them as visible as possible
  • avoid being overtaken where this would be dangerous
