Donald Trump, the road that might not lead to the White House!

Pretty desperate stuff from Cruz and Katich,

Even if it works and stops Trump from reaching the magic number it's only going to make Trump's supporters more likely to kick off if he doesn't become the candidate.

Not sure the Repubs understand that, or maybe they just don't care. Ever since the Tea Party was paid into existence they've been grimly operating on the idea that they still control the faithful despite all other evidence. Smartest end to that I can see is a split which leaves the main party back in the same old hands. Maybe they're hoping Trump would stand regardless and take the unmanageable element with him. Wash out this election, Jeb Bush 2.0, or similar, next time.

Vanity really, could just embrace Trump. Not like he wouldn't tow the line if called to, whatever demagoguery he's using to win now.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a backlash against this gerrymandering & Trump gets a big boost in the polls.

I think the problem the top of the party has is that they have not managed to realize how utterly incompetent they are - starting with their utter mismanagement under Bush, but continuing under Obama and culminating in this utter disaster of an election campaign. If Trump does win the nomination (in the face of this unprecedented attack on their own leading candidate) he will probably take the chance to get rid of the lot of them. One would imagine this would leave the GOP in far better shape than it is now.

depending on who are installed in their place

Perhaps - though its hard to see how anyone could do a worse job than this lot have (even if they actually intended to do it), and the mere fact that their grip on the party has been removed would increase the chance that saner elements could come in (if not under Trump, then in the aftermath of his defeat).

Not sure if that breaks the deal - Kasich and Cruz have agreed not to campaign or advertise in the states they have ceded to each other, not to actually direct their supporters to vote for the other candidate.

Hard to see what these clowns think they can accomplish with this deal anyway, if they manage to screw Trump out of the nomination by the handful of delegates they're likely to gain from this, how do they think the 45% or so of Republicans who voted for Trump are going to react?

Trump's now attacking Kasich for being a sloppy eater, having possibly forgotten that he also has been photographed while eating...

Riots. It confirms everything he's been telling them.......system is rigged.

He has won all five states tonight, by miles. In Pennsylvania (where Cruz is looking to steal delegates, as most of them are not bound by the popular vote) he has apparently won every county, by at least 10%.

Primaries are essentially over. It's The Donald v. Hillary. Hope the gung ho Bernie people won't be so bitter they don't vote. The mission now is to stop Trump & I think he will be stopped.

I see he's saying all Hillary's got going for her is 'the women's card'. Because being a woman has been such a big vote-winner in all previous US presidential elections, hasn't it...

...any aspirant politician really needs to take a food blender with them everywhere & have any meals pulverised into liquified goo....

...they should probably avoid bananas aswell....

I don't think I understand this 'politicians eating/holding foodstuffs amusingly' trend of recent years.

Does anyone look at that last one and go 'oh, I thought he was a credible future leader of the nation, but now I've seen him holding a banana I realise he's a laughable twat... ha ha ha - a banana!'?

My reaction was "why?"

Back when all this was fields, politicians like Gummer used to get their kids to do the eating

I still think that the demographics of the US in 2016 mean that Trump is unelectable however it's going to be a lot closer than a lot of people think and worryingly increases the potential for extraparliamentary right-wing violence.

Same reason politicians get pictured drinking beer, they want us to think 'hey that person drinks beer I drink beer, great'

I agree, there seem to be a lot of assumptions made by the Democratic side (especially Hillary's campaign) of the same sort that were made in the early days of the Republican primaries by the candidates who were portraying themselves as the favourites to win - that whole demographic blocks of people couldn't possibly vote for him, that his arguments are lunacy, that he could be destroyed by looking at his background, that "their" candidate has a record which he possibly cannot hope to match etc.

As for the violence, I am sure the incidents at his rallies will continue (if for no other reason that people will keep protesting at them) but the people who would actually organize and take part in the more serious stuff are much more likely to be Cruz supporters.

I understand why politicians think the photo op is a good idea in the first place (usually - the banana one's a bit less clear) - what I don't understand is whether/why anyone would let it impact in any way on their opinion of a politician.
