so these new amps are working a treat.

only thing is, there is a little too much bass, even at low volume.

I do like to have a razz on occasion but bit worried about downstairs.

speakers are on thick carpet, but if I put something more under them, say paving slabs or similar, would this help?

CD player - literally anything. As long as it works and the mechanism isn’t making audible clunking noises you won’t hear any difference between them.

so you're saying there is no real difference in sound quality between high end player and a budget model?

You need to disconnect them from the floor as much as possible. Spikes or even something like tennis balls would work.

Just stick 4 tennis balls (or squash balls, depending on the weight of your speakers) under each speaker. It's far cheaper that any alternative. I use squash balls under all of my 3D printers. It almost halves the DB.

Audiophiles of Urban - long time reader, first time poster. I come in need of assistance.

Soundbars, of which I have 2 - excellent for TV, lousy for D&B. Without a separate full size sub it just can't cope. Need better for tunes.

So with that in mind and a willingness to go second hand for budget reasons (about £200 so nothing OTT, just decent home audio), recommend me an amp and speakers. Ta

A la Blue Peter, Here's some I prepared earlier:

They're squash balls mounted in cups I designed and printed to fit he machine. They make a massive difference..

Pretty much any speakers and any amp will sound better than a soundbar. A soundbar is for people whose TV sounds shit but they want to spend money on it to make it sound equally as shit.

Denon do decent and cheap enough home cinema amps.

I got this one second hand just recently for £100.

I have this awesome soundbar with some Italian algorithms or something that actualy makes it sound surroundy.

Speaker in front of you but you can literally hear people sneaking up behind you when playing video games and on some films.

Used to do the speakers and amp thing - worked really well, can’t fault that plan, but this thing is way better. Also use it as a stereo in the front room.

Obv can only back this up if you come round my house.

Yeeeessssss, and that's why I'm asking?

Anyone else got a constructive opinion?

<eta> Just to be clear, this isn't about making the telly sound better although that would be a happy side effect. This is primarily for music.

It's one of those "how long is a piece of string?" questions. What do you want from it? How much do you want to spend? Where will you be sitting in relation to the sound source? Etc.
If you want it for music and TV and games, and you're not too far from the TV, then I'd personally go for a pair of active nearfield monitors. They tick every box, and you know that a half decent set of acoustically flat monitors will wipe the floor with pretty much anything... if that's what you're after.

Ta, more like it

Living room, 7m x 4m. Sofa directly opposite. On nights without the kids my partner and I tend to put D&B on, loud - we want it to sound good, that's pretty much it.

£200 is the budget. Appreciate that's a bit tight so as I said 2nd hand is all good with me.

I've been out of the audio stuff for some time but I've been running a pair of these as my TV speakers (and music, gaming, etc.) for the past 10 years:

https://www.thomann.de/ie/behringer_b2031a_truth_aktivmonitor.htm

By the time they start clipping, my guests are already asking me to turn it down, because it's far too loud.

I'm sure there are plenty of other (newer) offerings for similar or cheaper prices, (But don't get the 2030A version of those Behringers, They were prone to radio interference).

I'd be tempted by a Rokit 4 active speaker and get a second when you can afford it. Sounds great with loud dance music.

My mate had the Rokkit 3. They started coming apart at the seams and making creaking/rattling noises within 12 months. I'd steer clear of them, because even if they don't fall apart, they still look like kids' toys.

Quality is good from my experience :)
I did an awful lot of research before I purchased the Behringer 2031A monitors. I was looking for something to master audio tracks with, as well as use for playing them through for an audience. My brief was "has to cost less than £500. Has to be as acoustically flat as possible (for the price) and has to be capable of being pumped up when necessary. The only monitors that ticked all of those boxes (at the time) were the 2031A.
I took them to my mate's house to compare them to his Rokkit 3s, and he was sickened when he heard the difference. Of course, it's purely anecdotal, but it took me 3 months to decide to buy them, and I bought them based on reviews from not-audio-snobs, and I was torn between them and a second hand set of the Genelec 1031A they were copied from... at about 1/5th of the price (1/10th of the new price of the Genelecs). I never buy Behringer gear, because Behringer, but they're still going strong, 10 years later, and have never been turned off from the day they were purchased (apart from moving them to another room).
A review of them here:
Behringer Truth B2031A Review

This is them in front of the TV.

There's the whole "Small - Far away" thing going on, but the TV is only 8" behind the speakers, and it's a 49" TV, so they're not the smallest of speakers.

If only you had a family member - a brother for example - who was a professional audio engineer that you could ask these sort of questions to :hmm:
