I had a cheap guitar cable that sounded bad. A very slightly more expensive one sounded much nicer. Though the cheap one was *really* cheap.
The cheap guitar cable must have been a bit broken.... instrument cables are a bit different as they are subject to a lot of abuse so paying a bit more for a well made one is well worth it. But a working cheap lead would sound identical to a working expensive one (it's just the working cheap one will probably stop working quite quickly).

But reading through those articles it seems that some people, who seem to know what they're on about, agree that there's some difference through various cables, no? Or is that just bollocks?

There may be a difference between a 99p cable, made from recycled dog shit in China, and a decent cable made from decent materials, but anything else is absolute nonsense, and anyone who tells you they can hear a difference between cables is a lying cunt.

Back in 78 I spent a lot of money on HiFi separates when I went onto full money at 21, I spent all i had saved and ended up using .5 Amp lighting flex for the speakers. It worked okay though some snobby mates sneered and took the piss, they were plasterers and loaded!
two years later I bought some quite expensive speaker connect cables and it made no difference whatsoever!
Lesson learned I then started wasting money on guitars!

I've got some pretty nice audio gear here. I use proper flat speaker cable for 2 speakers where I can't hide the cable. The rest of the speakers are wired with 2 core flex from an old electric lawnmower.
If spending more money on cables would make it sound better, I'd probably spend it, but it doesn't, so I won't.

It definitely doesn't now after working for forty odd years in engineering and five years live mixing for metal bands through massive PA rigs in small venues! I heard that...I think.

Then again, didn't Kurt Cobain use shitty old squier guitars and not the expensive fender American equivalents? Fair enough, he wasn't playing jazz, but it sounded good to my ears. And here's the rub, if it sounds good to you, it sounds good.
I've done side to side tests with my US Jaguar and my squire Jagmaster. Obviously the Jagmaster has far less options (which actually makes it more reliable) but the difference was negligible. The Jag did slightly have the upper hand. . . . but not a grands worth. I also have a Telecaster Deluxe that's worth nearly £4000. . . . and that's a piece of shit. However, because there was some perceived excellence from this rare model, I successfully rented it out for recording sessions a few times in the late 80s.

Yeah, it broke soon after so can’t argue with that.

I made some speaker cables from two lengths of old cat5 or 6 cable twisted together with banana plugs on the end and wrapped in a plastic cable sheath, they look and sound great. I often lie to people about the cost. I got the stuff from work it cost nothing.
They don't sound any different to the generic speaker cable which I replaced.

While the price for that is clearly ridiculous, a phono cartridge - like loudspeakers - is arguably one area where spending more could bring gains, due to the mechanical elements involved. Higher machining tolerances, the winding on the coil, precision of the needle etc.

As ever though, whether any of that would make an audible difference after a certain point is somewhat debatable.

Cable burn-in -

Send them money and your cables. They'll plug them into their magic box which will make them sound better.

Part of me really hopes they actually just chuck them on a shelf somewhere, leave them for a few days then send them back. It'd be a brilliant scam :D

Fuck that, sounds like too much work. Just give them a fake address and have the post office return them to sender a few days later.
