I shall make my usual point here, which is that unless your audio set-up is a Fisher-Price Kiddykassette, or your ripping process is somehow being infiltrated, then psychoacoustics are playing a role, and you're hearing what you expect to hear - rather as "audiophiles" do when they hear a difference between an MP3 reproduced using £500 speaker cables rather than 13amp mains cable.

I doubt it TBF. I use my ears for practically everything in daily life, running my speech synth at 350/400 WPM. It's definitely noticeable to me. Now, if I had sight and wasn't so dependent on hearing, I'd take your point because the differences between MP3 320 and FLAC are really quite subtle. But because I've trained my ears to guide me those subtle differences are noticeable without me having to do much work.

You really should do an ABX comparison to test your belief. There's a plugin for foobar 2000 which would enable you to do this.

Some friends of mine did some double blind testing (proper musos, the testees included matt black from coldcut and other ninja tunes artists).
It was a test of various mp3 rates against CDs and at 196k only the professional music producers could tell the difference, no one could distinguish between CD and 320k mp3.
They did this so they could happily move from CDJs to MP3 dj / live stuff.
Be interesting to hear the results of mp3 vs flac.

Have you guys had this yet? http://www.coconut-audio.com/rcainterconnects.html

So, that's more than a bit confusing. What does it actually do*? It seems to claim that it allows you to play an mp3 player through their box, to in some way be read by your record deck... for a moment I though it was a really expensive shit version of serrato, but that plays the audio from your laptop, using decks as controllers, whereas this seems to claim it plays your digital music through your record player?
It's just an empty box with wires and two switches isn't it. Please god, tell me that's all it is :D

*I mean in the context of all audiophile stuff doing nothing, I can't even work out what this one claims to do.

I can't work it out either :D

Maybe there's a cartridge and stylus holder in the box, with the stylus sat in a groove which is excited by the digital signal, and the resulting signal then blended back into the output with the digital signal to give a faux-vinyl type sound?

The Diamond is a top-grade Ethernet Cable which is the result of a lifetime's research by AudioQuest made from the very best materials available. This really is a 'money no object' cable for the dedicated Hi-Fi enthusiast that has extended into a world of digital audio sources.

All audio cables are directional. The correct direction is determined by listening to every batch of metal conductors used in every AudioQuest audio cable. Arrows are clearly marked on the connectors to ensure superior sound quality. For best results have the arrow pointing in the direction of the flow of music. For example, NAS to Router, Router to Network Player.

I was trying to buy normal audio equipment the other day and came across this garbage. This thing only costs £99.

From What Hi Fi:

"The sound it produces isn’t the best at this price, but it’s still an admirable performance. What is immediately apparent is the sheer size of the sound. It’s effortlessly big – you certainly won’t need to worry about filling the room with sound effects.

You’ll have to give the unit a good night or two of running-in to rein in the treble a little, and to improve the level of organisation. Even with a good few hours under its belt, however, the sound could be a touch cleaner.

This slight flaw, though, is offset by the soundbar’s enthusiasm and competence. The timing is good, the dynamic range is wide, and there’s a nice sense of cohesion. What you get, then, is a lively sound with plenty of energy. "

I think in reality all they can reasonably say is that it sounds alright but perhaps needs a bit more bass or something. But that wouldn't fill a magazine so they talk bollocks. I bet if you gave them two of these units, a new one and a used one, they wouldn't be able to say which one needed the treble reining in for a night or two or which was more organised.
