Diane Abbott suspended as Labour MP.

Abbot's got a history of saying weird things about race going back to the Finnish nurses thing in the 90s. Not keen on her for several reasons but Starmer's reaction is disgusting.

What else was he gonna do though. I mean if you keep making these fuck ups as I say, your enemies are going to capitlise on them. From Starmer's PoV, like or not, to do nothing would have just allowed the Tories and related press to go all in on, Labour has a problem with anti semitism again

Up the thread are examples of where white men have said dubious things eg the shekels comment and nothings been done. But when a black woman says something she retracts action's taken. Labour may have an issue with as but it certainly has a shammer problem

He should have had the whip withdrawn too but a letter like this to a national paper, is still a bit more of a faux pah than an antisemetic tweet.

I would be very sad if they got rid of John McDonaell.
He was always the most personable and intellectually sound of the lefties.
He would have been a better leader than Corbyn IMHO - though my views don't count - haven't been a Labour member since 1972!
Did they shift too far to the right for you?

But capitalised 'Black' is fine? I consider it racist behaviour to capitalise either.

Yeah, that does seem weird (especially reading the thread from back to front as I tend to).

I'm a little surprised that Abbott's letter led to this (seems like fairly standard idpol jostling for position), but obv Starmer got a nudge from someone that there was an opportunity there.

No I discovered they were homophobic - and at Manchester Uni where the choice was Soc Soc or Lib Soc I chose Lib Soc.
I'm sure you would be aware that Soc Soc was more like SWP or suchlike. Even the official Labour Students were riddled with Trots and Marxists.
Somewhat like Urban75 - oooops.........

The Holocaust was a prime example of racism, by everyday standards or by the standard in use by people that claim that white people can't experience racism. The argument usually goes that racism = bias + power. In Nazi Germany there was bias and there was definitely power. If you read what the Nazis themselves said about it, they considered Jews to be of another race, with clearly defined and identifiable racial characteristics. Then they used every bit of power at their disposal, sometimes prioritizing trains bound for concentration camps over those carrying troops to the front, against them.
If you've ever wondered how the nazis managed to find the Jews, the answer's simple - they used census data in many countries, and state of the art IBM machines

Black and White (as in people) are capitalised to distinguish from actual physical colour .. zebras and pandas are actually black and white, people tend to actually be shades of pink and brown. Black and White are capitalised for political purposes IIRC

While this does appear to be the case, it seems outstandingly stupid.
Your implied suggestion of using pink and brown instead is more sensible.

I do think if we're going to refer to people's skin colour we should at least try for accuracy.

Starmer denounces Diane Abbott's "hierarchy of racism" - literally verbatim what he is accused of overseeing by Martin Forde in his report - does suggest not only can such a thing exists, also suggests Starmer should be consistent and go on to call Forde out for saying such a thing

I see Wikipedia confirms this

IBM in Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe[edit]

The Nazis made extensive use of Hollerith equipment and IBM's majority-owned German subsidiary, Deutsche Hollerith Maschinen GmbH (Dehomag), supplied this equipment from the early 1930s. This equipment was critical to Nazi efforts to categorize citizens of both Germany and other nations that fell under Nazi control through ongoing censuses. This census data was used to facilitate the round-up of Jews and other targeted groups, and to catalog their movements through the machinery of the Holocaust, including internment in the concentration camps.

Vanilla, Almond, Coffee and Chocolate

The thing is, vanilla seeds are black. Almonds are creamy inside but brown outside. Coffee beans are green then yellow then orange then red, before they ever get to be brown. And as for chocolate, who knows? So many colours to choose from...

So as well as regular humans we would have Orions, Barsoom Martians and Oompah Lumpa's covered as well.

The thing that I keep going back to is, as clumsily and poorly as she may have put it, Starmer* has deliberately stripped all context and conversation away from her saying this as a Black woman who has frequently been on the receiving end of racism, in order to be able to boot her. That feels like a pretty racist act in itself.

What an end to the career of the first Black woman MP and the longest serving Black MP :(

*who incidentally I’m struggling to see as part any group identity who faces marginalisation

I wouldn’t go as far as racist, but given the amount of that racism directed at Abbott over the years it does feel a bit rum and opportunistic.

Complicates things for Corbyn a bit. If they both stand as independents, they'll be labelled as the anti-Semite twins.
