As the Real Capital of Ireland, the City of Cork deserves its own thread for tourists, places to see, tips & news for all the followers.
I will start off with some Cork slang:
Langer - someone foolish, or a dick, eg "you big langer!" - always thought this came from German word for snake , ie schlanger , which is slang in itself for 'prick' , ie Hosenschlanger (trouser snake) ....
Pana - affectionate name for St Patricks Street in Cork (the main thoroughfare) - eg "I was doin' pana and saw a group of langers!" (I was walking down Patricks st and saw a group of nare-do-wells)
Bazzer - a hair cut
50 - to be stood up, eg "we arranged to meet on pana and she gave me a 50!" (50 either means only 50% if ye turned up, or the need for 50p for phone box to ring and check where the langer is)
Lash (not specific to Cork, but very popular there) - can mean give it a try , its raining very heavily , or to be drunk ...... context is everything
Doll - a nice lady of certain age.
Beour (pronounced be-y'ore) - girlfriend
Boy - a human . Add this to the end of every sentence to sound like a true child of the city, boy!
Local culture:
Guinness is available, but seen by many as a 'Dublin' drink and the true rebels only admit to drinking Murphy's
Everyone thinks they are great singers, and even when they are talking the accents go up and down , much like the countryside ...
Cork is the largest county, and you are sure to hear "If you start from the very west of the county and start driving to Dublin, you will be half way there and still in Co Cork, boy"
Places to visit:
One of my fav places in county Cork is Bantry. All of West Cork is a haven for ex-pats and English / French / Dutch / Germans who want to get away / retire from the hustle and bustle of the rat-race, but still have access to (semi) decent internet, roads, emergency services. The further west you go in Co Cork the less these apply..... but a great place for aging hippies and midnight tokers ;-)
