Copenhagen - things to do, places to visit and general chat

Just the regular sweeps by the politi designed to intimidate the residents and visitors. They finished a skate park earlier this year which looks great. Just wish i still skated...

I heard about the park, one of the blokes behind it is a BMXer, I'm thinking of taking my son while things are still there.

....goes off to look at flight prices:)

Boris, have you heard more about the police violence during the autonomous/youth protest against the closing down of Ungeren? :(
i try to find neutral reports about it, but all the mainstream media have twisted things totally on its head and claim "anarchist wronguns" (sic) started it... (surprise, surprise... )

apparently the pigs used very brutal methods and ran their car over one of the youths or something- over 100 were arrested, and i think one of my friends might be among them (he travelled to denmark to meet up with some people attending the demo and i haven't heard from him since- might just be coincidence, though)

Apologies for the delay in replying. Do you have links for these claims?

From what I gather, the protest was not organised in advance. Of course you can't have people going round protesting about things without notifying the authorities beforehand.

To be honest reading what i have in the papers and speaking to friends that live in the area, it's a case of six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Loads of people from abroad turning up in solidarity, or for a chance to have a go at the police. Lots of video footage of kids throwing rocks and trying to smash police wagons. Old bill just sitting there bored.
I have heard that violence was sporadic all night. Most of the time it was peaceful and you could walk around the area fairly safely. The police were aware they were dealing with young kids (the youngest arrested were about 13) and were appropriately subdued in their manner.
Looting and smashing of local businesses by anarchist yoof. Way to go. In fact the bahaviour of some of these morons, has seriously damaged relations to the Ungdomshuset and they have lost sympathy of some of their neighbours.

Of course it doesn't help that the Government had rengaged on their promise to let the kids be there. Or that the old bill do show up in full riot gear - we all know that provokes a fight and its not to say the police don't love it either.

The government got the reaction they wanted. Shame. :(

yeah... i know what you mean, many misfit teenagers find demos like this their only place to vent suppressed frustration/anger, and end up running around throwing bricks and making the police seem like the good ones-
later, when the tv pictures/new stories focus on hooded youths vandalising stuff, their behaviour gets used against them and so loud conservative elements shout out for the house to be closed down anyhow, because "look, they all are like this"...it's very sad. :( because they really had a good cause.

but that we get this, along with the city of c. doing everything they can to eradicate the autonomous and close down Christiania aswell, does seem like a rather intentional effort from the authorities? i bet they're itching to get "those leftie types" out of there, so that they can claim the area and sell it to private investors who will build luxury flats and acellerate the gentrification...
i see exactly the same thing happening with the two youth-houses we have in our city, and only by luck and massive protests did we manage to save the properties in the nick of time...the city council is still scheming against them.

(BTW, my friend texted me from amsterdam... he never went to copenhagen! the weirdo... :D )

a few times, but not for a couple of years

open hash market once upon a time - like whole stalls selling all kinds of weed etc by the gramme / oz or Kilo I suppose.aggressive stallaholders in some place - definately NO pictures!

there were a few bars in the place where you copuld buy beers , but they were quite righly arsey about smoking in the bars themselves ansd going outside to smoke in -10 degress was interesting to say the least

I should go back at some point

Got bitten by some nasty insect there in the early 80's leading blisters the size of tennis ball on my feet. It's a gated community for NIMBY hippies.

I live 10 minutes away from Christiania and will post more when not at work.
Yes you can still buy weed there, dodgy gangs operate the place now following the police crackdowns. Definitely no photos down pusher street.
There is a hash cafe where you can skin up (occasionally it gets raided), DrRingding and i got asked to leave for drinking our own beers in there. :D
It's better in the summer ;)

last time I went , I got utterly skunked at Christiana and found myself whisked off ( by persons unknown ) to an all night Faroes social club seemingly populated by sub 5 ft female munchkins anda bar selling only one type off beer with a sheep on the label.

* makes note to get back to Copehhagen soon *:D

odd.

Sounds like a place with the right idea but they can't get it to work right. Sounds pretty dodgy to be fair. Even the residents don't sound like a nice community. Is it really worth it to go buy some weed?

It was great 10 years ago. I hear it's not quite such a relaxed atmosphere now with police patrolling through it regularly. Pity; it was a nice place to waste away your life, especially in the summer.

if areas like that were much more common then they woudent have SO many troubles, they would be spread out.
this is especially true of drugs, imagine if 10 (or even 1) major european cities followed the dam's lead with regards to coffeeshops, the problems amsterdam have would diminish considerably as the doped up tourist's and dealers dissapated across the continent *sigh
instead Amsterdam gets loads of shit for being a 'drug haven'

All sounds very interesting. I'm over there for a couple of weeks with work so will no doubt check it out.

I have heard the same as other people that most of the drug trade has stopped after the police crack down, but you can still pick up a bit of stuff.

I'm mainly interested in just seeing the community and how they have set it up.

Went there with a band on tour, was interesting. They are really down on hard drugs so don't ask or you will make yourself unpopular very quickly.

Also they don't let people wear sunglasses in the bars. They got fed up with junkies hiding their pinned out eyes.

Does hard drugs include pills etc? Or just coke and heroin? Not going to go but just curious. Do they allow acid and stuff?

I think they're pretty much all a no-no. You probably need to be fairly well known to get any of that. They got sick of drugs tourists a long time before people in brixton.

Has anyone ever been to Christiania? the freetown?

Im going backpacking accross europe March 6th.. my first stop- Amsterdam. Im going to take it from there, but obviously it will need a little planning.. i dont want to be going back and forth.
I found out about Christiania a couple of years ago- but never really thought too much about it. Unitll i went to a squat party on New years eve and got talking to this really random squatter.. about europe. He told me about Christiania and this got me looking into it abit more.

Can anyone tell me their experience of visiting?

I've been to Copenhagen, but only briefly, and decided to skip Christiania; but if I were in town for longer I'd certainly go.

I hear it's pretty much past its prime, utterly touristic, and sort of lame; but worth visiting nonetheless.

Copenhagen's about 2 square miles in total and the whole state of Denmark's only slightly bigger ;) so I wouldn't stress about going. Just go!

I went a few years ago...it was freezing cold and pissing it down with snow and rain...the whole place was a mud bath...I suspect I may not have seen it at its best :) Not sure what it's like now but then people were openly selling weed, in the summer its probably quite fun.

I had stopped posting from work but i saw this...

I live about 5 minutes away from Christiania and visit frequently.
It's a great place, particuarly in the summer. Christiania itself is set next to lakes and woods, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly for the most part, of course, since you have the drug dealers - mostly gang related - it can feel a little moody down pusher street but as long as you respect their "turf" and don't take photo's it is ok.
You will see some quite fucked up people but the atmosphere is good. Live music and singing in the summer, some good veggie restaurants.
I really recommend it (and Denmark in general), the way of life is very different to the UK.

edit: pm me for any specific questions.

Well, now I feel like an eejit for posting random, negative hearsay.

I will most certainly go when I return to Denmark!

 :D
