Another cancelled project from the Convair Archive - The Convair XP6Y-1, Anti-Submarine Warfare aircraft from the 1950s. It got as far as a mockup of one of its potential configurations before cancellation, then the P3 Orion was slotted into its intended role.

A touch of the old ekranoplan going on there, I think. Not sure about the colour, though :D

Yup - One of its design goals was to make use of boundary layer control to be able to fly very slowly/controlably over target locations. Which does touch on the same territory as Ekranoplans.

The wings are folded on this test model but when fully unfolded and along with the large tail surface do give it a rather different profile to other US flying boats of the era.

A freezing day at the pleasingly amateurish Norfolk and Suffolk aviation museum yesterday. They have some interesting stuff but I only took a few photos because freezing:

Prototype English Electric Lightning (there is also a Lightning cockpit you can sit in):

For cold war fans, there's also a Sea VIxen, a Canberra, a Javelin, a Hawker Hunter, a Mystere, an F4 and an F100. Well worth a trip.

Would I be right to guess there is a fair amount of rivalry between AF and Navy pilots? And that it is also the case in the UK, or most other countries with a naval air force for that matter?

Dunno about the US but not particularly in the UK. (In my time anyway). Although when 1(F) deployed to Invincible in the Med there was a healthy competitive atmosphere between us and our STD addled comrades in dark blue. Some VERY sporty flying ensued until our CO failed to establish in the hover off the port side for a night landing. He went for a swim in the med and his GR7 (which was not long off the showroom floor) ended up like this,.

ETs are generally very aerodynamically efficient; it's only when you get into transonic regimes where you really start to pay for them. Some slide rule/clunky glasses type at Lockheed once worked out that putting ETs on the SR-71 would actually reduce its range.
