Of course both America and Russia have plenty of old bombers in theirs fleets.

Wikipedia suggests a lower number, America has 8095

That's the "Constant Peg" Fishbed-E that was stolen from Iraq by Israel. The US and Israeli pilots liked almost everything about it but it was supposed to be nightmarishly difficult to taxi. It's now in the Israeli Air Force museum.

Now the US just buys brand new ones off the showroom floor from China.
Guy here discusses the Mig-21 as part of the Constant Peg thing. TLDR: a terrible POS, but surprisingly good for what it is (a terrible POS) in spite of that.

Oh I dunno. He said he'd prefer it to the F-5E, and that's the closest to a NATO Fishbed there is. Simple, effective, built in large numbers for export and for production abroad.
Edit: Also similarly tiny compared to later gen aircraft.

Awesome photo.

Q for fast jet pilots, (Downward Dog again, sorry). Lightning looks at the edge of stall there, or is it just the angle? Was it routine or just a gas stop?

It's hard to tell from the photo as there is no datum to see what the pitch is. The Lightning did have quite benign handling at near stall conditions I dimly recall. I have a total of 5 minutes stick time in a T5 so I consider myself somewhat of an expert.

I exhumed my log book to check if I had remembered the 5 minutes correctly and I had. The entry said (in very shaky handwriting - I was only 19 and clearly quite overcome!):

ENGLISH ELECTRIC LIGHTNING T5 XS452 Pilot 1:Fg Off XXXXXXXX Pilot 2: D. Dog 0:05

I had very precisely underlined 'ENGLISH ELECTRIC LIGHTNING T5' three times. LOL.

Quite a landmark. 😮

Doesn’t the U2 need some kind of assistance on landing so the tips of the extremely long wings don’t drag along the runway as it reduces speed? Or perhaps it was on take off...

IIRC it was simple but effective - guys in cars running alongside each side of the aircraft as it landed, shouting “up a bit/down a bit” over the radio..!

And sticks with little wheels on on each wing tip for take off, they fell off when the plane started flying, called pogos ironically...
