Chikka chikka wa waah! It's the music production thread.

Yeah I bought SD second hand off someone. I wanted it for the real kits. Got a really good deal on it as he threw in a few expansion packs. Drums for rock / metal I find really time consuming to track. Trying to fake how a real drummer might play...

But there's loads cheaper ways to do it if you got a good sample set. Check out SFZ format. LIke an open source sample format. I keep meaning to make some sets up with it.

I have never hit a drum in my life but I am keeping my eye out for a midi kit to use with SD. Great find, getting it with the expansions. I think a big part of it is the ability to mike the drums up however you like.

OH yeah totally. I just do finger drumming on the keyboard or input them in step recording. TBH sometimes I just drum along with MP3s and pretend I know what I'm doing. :D

Ha, just listened to this on headphones. It's like being at the dentist. But I mean that in a good way. What did you do that on / with?

LOL!

It's all done on an ipad. Erm. Moog Model D. Animoog, which is possibly the greatest synth I've ever had. Patterning 2 for the drums and then I ran the Animoog through Xequence.

I had them all sequenced in Aum with Audiobus running the Animoog back to Aum.

It was the first time that I ran 4 instruments at once. First time I'd recorded more than 1 track. First time I'd sequenced 4 tracks. First time I'd mixed anything. First time I'd used Audiobus to run a mix to Aum. I played it all live, recorded each track separately and then mixed them together. I really need to learn more about mixing.

Morning!

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge comrade killer b's idea that we post our jamz. Let the committee minutes record our thanks for his shit hot suggestion.

I learnt more yesterday, or maybe packed more learning in, than I ever have. This will be my preferred way of doing from now on.

With that in mind, I need to think about what happens when I want to actually record something. Like, what is that called? Mixing? Mastering? Do I record each part seperately? I have no idea lol.

Also, suggestions for ways to make music please. Like, make an X track, or whatever. I think I've found my learning groove.

Good work. :) I don't know anything about production on mobile devices really. Just reading about those. I'm gonna get the Yamaha Bluetooth midi adapter though so I can play Synth1 from a keyboard.

I'm still learning about mixing. EQ carving, dynamics in a mix. As in movement, interesting things happening. Whether bringing vocals forward for some parts, syncing delay times to an LFO, special effects, yarda, yarda. This another reason why I love Reaper. You can wire anything to anything

I've been gathering equipment for years, at the expense of actually getting results out of it beyond making noises that make me happy. Its just too easy to plug a nice synth into a lovely reverb and get lost for hours.

On the ipad front, have you tried Poly 2?

Here is some tutorial where it is used to send midi to different instruments via AUM.

Synth1? Is that the SynthMaster1 made by KV331? It's bloody amazing and there are so many presets for it.

I have tried Poly 2, elbows . It's another one of those deep deep rabbit holes of an app. I really like that you can easily load samples into it and tweak them and get a groove going quite quickly. I am focusing on the randomiser aspects of it atm. Those options that include the icon that looks like little red and white footprints on the right hand side menu. You can press and hold it and if you don't like what it does with the sequence then just let it go or you can change the sequence and lock it in. That's at a similar level to being able to play Oranges and Lemons on the recorder at junior school lol.

When the pupil is ready, the book appears. Something like that. I was sat there (there, that chair with the overworked look about it) yesterday wondering what one does to a collection of sounds in order to collect them into song form. I like to start learning something from the start. If there is one. It is a subjective thing, the start of something. What would be the start of the end of a song? I guess it's when you've stopped adding to it and want to coral it all together. So I was sat there, when a book dropped through the letterbox. In an envelope. It was Audio Effects, Mixing and Mastering by Metin Bektas. It's a very small and inviting book. I started reading and he spolied it by talking about the stuff in the middle paragraph. I will forge ahead though.

Do you use an ipad for music production, elbows? What's your favourite bit of gear?

Just thought xenon, are you getting a bluetooth adapter so that you can connect your ipad to some of your gear? Unless it's something that's MIDI only, like your Novation synth then you can connect via USB to the ipad. Or instead of forking out £50 for the Yamaha, you can get a MIDI to USB for a tenner.

yeah I’ve got Synth One by audio kit, free app. Would need a lightning adapter with the cable. But I want to upgrade this phone at some point and since Apple done away with the headphones jack, I wouldn’t be able to record audio and connect to it at the same time. it’s 36 quid now, should get it later in the week. :) i’m thinking I can I have some daisychain thing going on so I can sequence it with the DAW. If I get that working, I will commit to posting something on here on Sunday, an idea at least.

A good, animated guide to compression here the animated guide to compression — pATCHES
Lots of other useful stuff there although quite ableton centric.

I don't really understand why more companies don't promote their DAWs like Ableton is promoted. It has more ways of integration than others and is just out there on so many more levels. I love Bitwig but they couldn't raise interest in a free gold bar.

T-Racks compressors and mastering tools are extremely good value in my opinion, and simple to use.
I would feel really stuck without them. I don't have this latest lot, but if I update to the latest version of Logic these are the ones I would immediately buy. Don't need any of the fancy deluxe stuff. Their clipper, limiter and compresser set is very simple and very effective.

. . . but maybe bide your time. They quite often suddenly switch to half price deals for certain periods.

Nice one. Literally, just searching for one this very minute! I do believe they've extended their half price sale until the end of May, so I'll see if this is included.

That tutorial is brilliant danski, thanks so much. :)

I might just buy the new ones for my laptop.
The annoying thing is that Logic and Mac stuff keeps making other plugins or even their own systems incompatible. My Laptop is a higher OS than my main, more powerful mac. I have a version of logic on my Mac, but if I upgrade it it won't now run on my current OS. I can't get the OS up to current spec now, and anyway that would loose all my T-Racks. My laptop is top spec, and I can buy a new Logic and T-Racks for that, but I'd have to tweak everything all the time if I worked between the different systems.

That sounds really frustrating. I have never owned a Mac, only because I have knowledge and experience of Windows but none with Os X. I have seen quite a few posts recently on other forums about how Apple haven't updated Logic recently and speculation about why that is. Lots of stuff about Apple music software becoming outdated and Apple not seeming to focus on those issues too much recently.

I was just about convinced that my next computer would be a Mac but now I'm not sure. Even with the iPad being my primary DAW hardware.

Does Logic desperately need an update? I don't even have logic x yet but it's still great. I originally had the full studio and audio dubbing program in 8 and I think mine is 9 - had to upgrade when I got a new Mac and 8 wasn't supported. and it is great. I see a few extras on logic x that might be useful to me, but nothing so incredible I'm itching to get it again. All add ons from here are just gimmicks or extra sounds. It's recording software and it has a great interface, I have preferred it (and still do) to every other platform I have ever used (Session 8, Pro tools, Cubase etc).
I don't really use much of the internal processors apart from match EQ.

What are the speculations it's not been updated? From my point of view I would simply say there is not much to update, especially for such a fine piece of software for only £200. Plus everything seems to 'just work' on a mac, I just plug all the mixers or pre amps, extra drives in and it's i'm off.

My main gripes with apple are them changing the connectors all the fuckin' time and making new OS backwards fuck things up (I had to buy a 2015 mac powerbook to keep the connections I wanted). If I get a new Mac now, none of my external drives will fit as they have changed the thunderbolt connection. I'd have to get an external DVD drive as they don't have that anymore, probably no SD card reader (though I can easily get around that) .

But despite all that, I'd still rather use a Mac and Logic Pro.

Just found an app called MIDIMITTR for iPad on the App Store. Looks like it could be helpful for you.

Fair play. To be more specific I was reading a lot about Os X and how it had been updated and left behind a lot of 32 bit software and then a few people had chimed in with how they were tired of it either changing too much or not enough lol. Someone had said that they had used Logic for years but for some reason they were off to Windows. I just got a flavour of dissatisfaction and added it to the whole Logic is coming to the iPad rumour plus the $700 Mac Pro wheels and started to think maybe they've lost the plot. Reading that back, I think it's more like I have. I get what you mean about connectors though. Cables drive me crazy.

I do love Apple software because it is just so well thought out and draws in software engineers who want to create in similar ways. My workflow will be mainly on the iPad. I was on Ableton today and I know I could pick that up and be much further on but it just doesn't interest me anywhere near as much as a touchscreen. I might get a Windows tablet and a copy of Bitwig. That would be another way to use that interface.

You're right about using what works for you. I completely agree.

Teenage Engineering drum machine out of the Gen X-1 via the filters etc. Right laugh.

Here is today's effort. I am just taking it as it comes really. Learning by doing and trying to soak it up that way. One thing that occurred to me about all of the apps that attempt to give you the power to just make music without the onerous bore of learning how, is that you can do that but a lot of it sounds bloody awful to me. I wonder if that is because they're basically learning how to play music, whilst recording it? Rather than having lessons, or teaching yourself and then recording it for public consumption.

Anyway! Here's something bloody awful, for public consumption.

Boodle Diddle Bim by Knob Ed.

On sale.

Sorry if that's not quite in the spirit of this thread but there's no other current music tech ones.

Does anyone know of a chart that will tell me what notes on the keyboard will be in key when played together?
