for a brand new never played any kind of guitar left handed learner is there any benefit in going specifically left-handed?
Not really. You use both your hands when you play. If you start from the beginning, learn to play 'right handed instruments' the 'usual' way - dont bother turning it upside down or anything. Left handed instruments are rarer and usually cost more for the same quality. Also, what SpookyFrank said...

At least that was my reasoning when I bought my son his first guitar, after talking to some really good lefthanded guitarists about it. But anything goes, really. dave wakeling from the beat is right-handed, but taught himself to play left-handed because he liked paul mccartneys style...
