Cecil, famous Lion from Zimbabwe shot dead by Dentist from Minnesota for $55k

I suppose it has highlighted the issue. Anyone dumb enough to have had a smiley photo taken next to an animal carcass is now going to be shamed and harassed by the looks of it. Hopefully killing animals purely for fun will soon be seen as unacceptable as going abroad to do some noncing.

Well said.

Has #Jesuiscecil been done yet? :)

Yup.

I have to admit to feeling that this is all getting a bit out of hand.

It seems to me that some people really do care more for animals than humans, which is fucked up in the extreme.

Think of all the situations where mistreatment of humans hasn't caused this kind of reaction.

tbf, think of all the situations where lions have been mistreated and no internets outrage has followed. Luckily Cecil's mum gave him a name...

there are rather more humans than there are lions. if there were millions and millions of lions this reaction probably wouldn't be happening.

Argh..Hmmph..

Chris Coltrane ‏@chris_coltrane 1 hr1 hour ago Yep, it's pretty much the worst when the ultra-rich spend their grotesque wealth on murdering wild animals.

Tbf thats a cape buffalo big bad tempered cow thing that can be turned into very tasty steaks :D
Still cant see the appeal in hunting one its not exactly a small target is it?
I've got a rifle with a telescopic sight vs a bad tempered cow hardly a sporting challenge.:(
when I first took up archery thought about bow hunting in the states bit more reseach, arrows even hi tech hunting arrows dont deliver a quick kill and hiding up a tree next to a bag of salt.
Shot a deer once hardest thing was crawling several hundred metres on the instruction of the ghillie to "own the kill" then dragging the carcass to the landrover:( Why anyone would pay or enjoy doing that fuck only knows :(rather cull MP's at least they are defended by armed plod so would make it a bit of a challenge plus mostly hang out in london so theres 4g and take away coffee :D

I have room in my heart for many hatreds

Cecil The Lion: White House To Review Petition
http://news.sky.com/story/1528012/cecil-the-lion-white-house-to-review-petition
The White House has said it will review a petition urging the Obama administration to send the US hunter who killed Cecil the lion to Zimbabwe to face justice.

More than 140,000 signatures have been gathered for the bid to send Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer to the African country.

It urges Secretary of State John Kerry and Attorney General Loretta Lynch to extradite the trophy hunter.

Any petition to the White House that attracts over 100,000 names within 30 days must receive an official response.

I think some of that is rooted in the idea that animals aren't as self-directed as humans and don't have the same moral capacity. Humans are expected to be moral agents capable of making their own decisions. (Often, all the better to blame the victim.) That's why small children in trouble get more attention than adults. They aren't considered fully competent moral agents. (I still can't figure out why blonde co-eds in trouble get more attention, though.)
