Cecil, famous Lion from Zimbabwe shot dead by Dentist from Minnesota for $55k

I've read/heard loads of interviews and this hasn't ever been brought up. It's a pretty serious allegation the make with no evidence other than a vague memory.

I just skimmed the relevant chapters of Life on Air, the ones about Zoo Quest. That 1950's show was made by accompanying London Zoo expeditions, who were going out to bring back specimens. Live ones, for the zoo's collections.

Well there is a chance I am mistaken, don't think so though.

According to the Beeb - there has been an "angry backlash" with the dental practice closed, their website and facebook both taken down after being besieged by angry comments ...

Named in that Beeb piece as "Walter Palmer"

Little bit of instant justice , nice to see , though hoping it doesn't necessarily have to end there .

Nice little kicker at the end of that piece :

"The six cubs of Cecil will now be killed by the new male lion in the pride, Mr Rodrigues added, in order to encourage the lionesses to mate with him."

I don't understand the fetishism of wanting to shoot animals with a cross bow. In this case, as I suspect with many others, the animal would only be injured requiring a rifle to actually kill them. Seems extra cruel to me.

It's not, IF you're skilled enough with the crossbow. This mouth mechanic obviously wasn't, and would probably have arsed up even if he'd been hunting with a rifle.

Considering he's a dentist probably got the assistant to do the clean up (in this case, kill it) and the assistant is behind the camera

I wonder what poundage of crossbow he was using. Crossbows are quite capable of killing a lion, but you need to enough force to do the job. I'm betting it didn't have enough power to kill a lion in the first place because he couldn't pull it.

Poor, magnificent beast destroyed by a human's ego and desperation to prove he is something he plainly is not.
I hope all his teeth get broken and look like sugar puffs.
The lousy bastard.
I hope whoever or whatever he loves breaks his heart.

US freind of mine is a hunter, as in he goes out with a rifle and kills a couple of dear to fill his freezer. he shoots to eat, or to cull a distressed animal, considers it better if he manages both and regularly cleans up after incompetent cunts in his area who won't track down the animal they injured. if he's to be believed, and there's not a great deal of reason for me not to, the vast majority of those like him who grew up shooting consider this bloke a cunt as much as people here do. this isn't the culture of the people who grew up with hunting for food as normal. it's the culture of a cunt who wants to play in their world and not treat it with the respect they do.

I grew up hunting and there's an ethic good hunters learn. One of them is that you don't take the last animal, the last fish, or the last mushroom. You leave enough so that their numbers can be replenished. Killing endangered species or any animal just for trophies is a sin as far as I'm concerned. (So is modern animal agriculture, but that's a different topic.)

It wasn't a crossbow, that was an erroneous report from early on. If you check some of the photos of him with his trophies you can see the bow in shot, it is a modern bow of some kind.

There was a similar backlash in Spain a while back when it came to light that the king had been off on safari and had shot a mature elephant whose corpse the newspapers showed him posing next to.

The general public mood is definitely against trophy hunting these days, but some of the nature reserves still earn money selling permits which shows an odd situation.

And of course the illegal trade in animal products still goes on, largely funded by Chinese crackpot remedies which don't seem to be going away.

I love to get close to exotic animals, and shoot them, but only with my camera!

Just skimmed the PM article, and for once I actually agree with something in the DM (and comments are quite enlightening !).

Also contains more background details on Palmer and his "hobby" of trophy hunting.
What a truly Obnoxious pratt that wankstain is.

I'm not defending him, or the practise of trophy hunting but ... the park release permits, the permits get bought by people who facilitate other (richer) people coming along and actually doing the hunting. All Dentist man is going to do is say 'I paid these people to take me to a lion I could shoot, the fact that it was illegal/outside the park limits/a celebrity lion are nothing to do with me, I just paid to shoot it'.

The 'guides' and the landowner will (hopefully) face charges but I suspect the dentist will get off scot free :(

should have a bit of amateur dentistry done for him to remember the country by.

Yeah , I suspect you're right . Also the chances of a yank being extradited , especially to Zimbabwe would virtually nil anyway .

But at least he's been outed and is now hated by millions the world over . And there may be some blowback on that . Whether anonymous types hacking him , business boycotted . Or maybe even an animal lover in the tax department who reckons he needs an audit . Just hope something shit happens to him .

Ffs the article said the lion got on with humans . Poor bastard probably walked up to them like a puppy .

Yeah , looks like it .

He looks like a fucking sex pervert too . To be fair to him .

He was settled sexual harassment allegations by a former employee who was also a patient, in 2009, according to documents from the Minnesota Board of Dentistry. He settled a corrective action with the board and his insurer paid $127,500 to his accuser.

The woman said “she was subjected to ongoing and unwelcome sexual harassment by (Palmer) including, but not limited to, verbal comments and physical conduct involving her breasts, buttocks, and genitalia.”
