Captain Sir Tom Moore RiP

Well his family seem pretty adamant that he didn't go to hospital until Sunday.

Are they? :hmm:

Only this is being wildly reported...

Information released on behalf of Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family revealed he tested positive for Covid-19 on January 22 after returning home from hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. The statement said Sir Tom was tested regularly for Covid-19 between December 9 and January 12 and each test returned negative.

“He was admitted to hospital on January 12. Whilst in hospital he received a pneumonia diagnosis. In addition, as with other patients, he was tested regularly for Covid-19.
“On January 22, Tom was discharged from hospital back to the family home where he felt most comfortable. Unfortunately he was left still fighting pneumonia and tested positive for Covid-19 that day.

“He remained at home, cared for by family and medical professionals, until he needed additional help with his breathing. He was taken by ambulance to Bedford Hospital on Sunday January 31.

"He did a decent thing with some money."

Good on him, RIP, nobody's knocking him. But the whole spectacle around him, the way it became the narrative of the nation, which leads to the way he is being remembered now (his own RIP thread in forums over the UK) is questionable. None of which, I'll say again, is his fault or reflects on him.

So he raised £39 million. 100 laps of the garden. And when we're down (ravaged by pandemic with an underfunded NHS) this is what we do. Roll your sleeves up and do it ourselves. And everyone could join in - by paying. What better way? And it went proper mental. Everyone was talking about Captain Tom. Not Tom. And god forbid he'd have been a Lance Corporal, can you imagine? But it's a happy accident he's a Captain and it plays nicely into the Britishness of the narrative. Follow the Officers!

But, y'know, not his fault. He just wanted to walk his garden and raise £1000. £39 million. How the fuck did that happen eh? Well, see above.

Because at the same time as Tom was doing goodness, so were loads of other people. Margaret Payne, who is 90 and walks with a stick, but is just Margaret Payne of Scotland, climbed her stairs 282 times ffs (the height of one of her favourite mountains). Eventually, nearly a year on, she'd raised half a million.

Not 39 million. Margaret Payne. Of Scotland.

I mean fucking hell, making nonagenarians walk up and down their stairs for a fraction of the money they chuck at their pals to set up systems that don't fucking work, no questions asked. Sick fucking country

Something broke when Diana Spencer was killed, and public death is political capital.

No
it didn't. What broke? There were mass displays of maudlinity before, always have been. In this country too. The idea that something in our national pysche (no such thing) broke over that is crazy. What broke was a war-time idea of unbreakable britishness that involved a male not giving up idea of some crying or whatever, with a supportive wife at home.

didn't say anything about 'national psyche'.

It doesnt rule in or out hospital acquired infection either. ie the original pneumonia could still have been Covid-19 related, and it is a struggle to get some patients to test positive at certain stages of infection, even if clinicians strongly suspect thats the underlying cause.

Having said that, I am obviously not ruling out hospital-acquired Covid-19 either, and I do go on about hospital infections a lot in this pandemic.

I was entertained by you saying wildly instead of widely. Well, mildly entertained not wildly entertained.

Quite. And the same with him. Nearly 100? Just give him the money.

Very sick.

Fucking hell.. Wembley Stadium is apparently lit up in tribute to him. I thought the sports news might be a refuge from this.
