Can I tone my hair without using clarifying shampoo?

I would chance it. Use your regular shampo in dry hair then rinse out and wash once more, that ought to be clarifying enough.

Disclaimer: I neither colour nor clarify my hair

Um, sounds a lot like my (ahem) shampoo of choice (for really filthy hair after a day of grubbing under bushes) - Fairy Green

Hair had roots that were very orange. In truth, the orange was about 3 inches from the root to the last time I coloured my hair properly. The orange came as a result of me using light ash blonde dye that just went berzerk on the roots.
I've been using purple shampoo and all that but got sick of it and just decided to use some Scott Cornwall toner. Its for platinum blonde but says it cools down orange and yellow tones.
So...I left it on for 20 minutes.
No result. Did it again and left it in for 45 minutes with way better results. I'm just about to go at it again ... but my concern is will I end up lilac grey? I've got meetings on Monday so I really don't want to look like Mrs Slocombe...but....:D

Ok
I really fucked up the hair.
Ronald MacDonald style.

So, last ditch effort and I've gone mocha brown.
It's dark but it's a gazillion times better than a half head of ginger and the other half brown blonde
.
So back to being a brunette.
Apparently it's taken years off me...(says the sister) :hmm:

A few years back I started dying my hair red again & for a while now I have wanted to be more brown again.

Anyone know to get the red out at home?

ETA: I have bought Ash Brown & tried twice but it’s not made much difference though I have 2 more to go!

I have a colour correction thing from Boots & clarifying shampoo for future hair dying. I want to be chocolate brown again, it’s a bit ginger round my hairline when a bright light hits it which is everyday in the bathroom mirror.

I went through the whole colour corrector business on Saturday.
It didn't work..
I got two different brown dyes a warm brown and a golden reddish brown. And put the reddish brown on first...dried the hair and it had toned the ginger tones down remarkably. Then I dyed over that with a warm mocha mid brown.

I also have loreal spray thing for the parting as there is about 0.5cm of reddish brown roots still.
The loreal spray is actually great. It washes out. So it'll only be used on roots.

I've no idea how this will pan out in a week or so or after I've washed it. But I wasn't forking out 60 or 70 euros in a salon...so...Im happy with it
It's a warm mid brown at the moment.

I realise this is an old thread, but how come nobody suggested the OP uses toning mist in proper Urban tradition?

PippinTook I have put on quite a few brown hair dyes this past 18 months , in September I put on a chocolate brownie one which may as well been a red one! Till that it had improved. I will give what I have purchased a go with low expectations.

Been reading that ash tones counteracts orange tones. So my next step maybe in 2 weeks will be to use an ash blonde tone level 6 to counteract any ginger roots or redness. Ash level 6 blonde has a green tinge which I hear will knock out the red/Orange.

Hope you get on well with your purchase...let me know how it goes :)

I’m planning to put a medium ash brown in next but for tonight I like strange strawberry brown colour!

I use clarifying shampoo occasionally anyway to strip all the crap I use on my hair. It feels really clean after and my hair is fine as long as I condition well.

Fairy washing up liquid is great as a clarifying shampoo if you need to strip out stuff that builds up.
Not for use too often though.. but your hair will be squeaky clean.
