Call Of Duty 4

well i take it you paid money for the pc your using at the moment, no? The money I save on games more than makes up for it.

It's a laptop and I wont be spending any more to upgrade it next year to make sure it can run the software I use. Don't get me wrong I'm basically platform agnostic; I just love good games but PC gaming is a bit hollow after a while mainly because you have to keep spending to be able to play the games you like.

For me the moment I realised I couldn't be fucked with it was when I was getting beaten at CounterStrike Source by clan mates running a better rig (higher frame rate and detail and bigger screens) and for my skills to mean anything I'd have to pay out more....

Sony cuts game designers' prices

Sony clearly have realised this generations fight isn't going to go their way anytime soon without some drastic action on their part:

Sony has halved the price of a software development kit that designers need to make games for its PlayStation 3 (PS3).

The attempt to woo game designers follows last month's price cut on the PS3 itself.

Although its predecessor dominated the games console market, the PS3 has struggled against the Nintendo Wii.

PS3 sales are particularly important for Sony because it plays the Blu-ray high definition DVD format, which is competing with the rival HD-DVD format.

Sony says that sales of the PS3 have improved since its price was cut from about $599 (£292) to about $499 in the US, Europe and Japan.
Sales of the PS3 in Japan beat the Wii for the first time in the week beginning 5 November.

PC's are better than consoles. I've had this PC since before the 360 came out and a new grafix card cost £120 now it competes quite well with the ps3 and 360.. a cheaper upgrade than either of those consoles.

I don't think either is better than the other, like I said I like good games. PC does some games better than consoles, consoles do social play better than PCs...

lol, wise up, a bit more detail doesn't mean fuck all, if you're good you're good, you obviously just can't take being a beaten and so can't cope with the l337ness of the PC gaming world.

Just bought this today. Done the first few levels. One of the most engaging and visually stunning games I've ever played. It gives you plenty of opportunity to sneak around like a badass SAS ninja with a semi-automatic, but when all hell does break loose... fuck me. I've never seen so much shit go off at once. The lighting, the weapons, the AI, the dodgy London accents... absolutely superb. It's worth buying for the gunship level alone :D

Zomg how good is this game?

I have only played the PC version though which is slightly choppy on my rig. If i run it in 800*600 it will just about hold the refresh rate (60fps) on my Athlon 6000 and X1950 card but I really want it running 1680*1050 and its around 25-40 fps at that resolution.

I really need to know what the 360 version is like. Apart from the obvious crapness of using a joypad for an FPS game, what are the frame rates and visuals likely to be like compared with my rig?

The 8800 Gt is out this week, I guess that would run it fine but spending £175to play one game?

I just dunno, 360 version or run it in 800*600?

I really want to get this, but I'm waiting till we get a PS3 in a couple of months.

Not true I'm afraid, when your memory can't keep up with the new skins or people have better monitors which show more of the playing field it's hard to compete. Not too mention new levels (custom or otherwise) that have greater detail than your graphic card is capable of handling...

The new Skins and badly designed levels in CSS put me off. I want a balanced game rather than something that has been cack handedly customised into un-usability.

Have they really got that good, I lost interest half way through 2, played 3 a bit and it just felt like they'd succumbed to the same thing the Medal of Honour (which started out excellent) did...
getting it for both pc and station next week it'sdefo the tide over game til GTA ... come over and look innit... :D

Fair enough, if the ps3 is technically more powerful (I know thats a very lazy and generic term) wont dev teams in time be able to produce better results on it once they're used to the architecture?
in essence yes if you look at the max specs of each machine then the 360 is still merely a high end controlled component gaming pc where as the ps3 is a deicated architeture console. however. realitively speaking you have to look at the fact that even san andreas and god of war weren't pushing the max spec of the ps2 even though their are games in the dying gens of the machine... they should be and could be better, but they don't max out the stats of the hardware.

So you have to look at what is technically possible and then what the standard is on the consoles. Thus far the 360 which is easier to program for because it's underlying OS and architeture is the same as the pc meaning you write the pc version of the code then recomplie it for the 360 with almost no changes other the console specifics. the pc code to ps3 code however needs at present to go through the middleware to render/map it to the underlying ps3 os (just as the old ps2 did) the standard thus far is that the 360 is paign mroe for exclusives and for publishers and it costs them less to intergrate with sony's middle ware or underlying OS so this means the 360 get's a boost from pc code being usually superior to console code.

this bell curve however also has dminishing returns as the pc code needs to support the rubbish nonsense pcs as well as the super slick upto date graphics. of corse this will be reifned etc for the 360 but it's likelly that although the publsihers understanding of the ps3 will come on it'll never reach it's peak, sadly.

At what stage do Sony say "Ah, fuck. Right lads, the ps3 isn't gonna do it for us, let's shovel our resources onto developing the ps4."?

tbh none.

i don't think there will be a ps4 persay they have already stated this is a minimum 10 year life span on the ps3 by which time i think consoles and in general media centres/pc's etc will be a bit long in the tooth.

the idea was to make higher quality equipment based on standard architecture. With the advent of digital vs annologue then you'll see more and more features built into the sets. also you look at the hdd specs of all consoles atm they are tiny and 500 gig drives are becoming the standard for media centre pc's then you are going to see that these things are easier to build into the set in some modular fashion than to sell as seperate standalones...

Can't see it anytime soon while the price cuts stimulate sales...

And captain Price is Johnny Allen! It almost put me off a little - I kept on thinking of that bit in Cliff Hanger where CF kicks Sly in the head whilst shouting 'Oi uuused to be a Stroiker!" THWACK :D

If they can't get people to develop for the PS3 what makes them think a more advanced PS4 will sidestep this issue rather than make matters even worse?

They'd engineer it to make it dead easy to code for, duh ;)
i doubt sony will do that what they might do is release a free SDK next time (they may even do this for this time too)

I think you are expecting the PS3 to be dead now because a year in it's not doing what the xbox does now, whereas a more fair comparitor would be were the first year games for the 360 any good? I mean in effect halo has taken 3 years to hit the stores and is supposed to be the pinicle of 360 gaming... so taking that viewpoint... the ps3 is matching the 360 pixel for pixel at present when the pinicle 360 games are out, imagine what it's going to do 3 years from now... ;)

more over i think that it also assumes that xbox live can in anyway compete with home (whenever it's released next year spring they say autum i say!!) it simply won't being able to have in effect a myspace meets second life social networking asepct for the console will bring a lot of users to the ps3 also by the time home comes out then all consoles will have dropped or remain in the case of the wii to about £200 at which point the 360's earlier release will unfortunatly begin to age the console noticably... imo

Not for at least five years. They want to recoup the investment, and take a nice profit off this one, first.

this is essentaily true too the ps2 only dropped in unit price after they had recouped their money they'll only do the same once the ps3 has recouped their omeny the mor price drops in the mean time the longer this will take the less good gaming will appear for it.

You'll note the price of the PS3 has already dropped at least $100 per unit, below last christmas' price.
