Police block access to the jungle:
Today, the police/government found a new way to hassle both helpers and refugees: They have decreted that from now on, only vehicles registered with a local NGO would be allowed in the jungle or would be able to park Chemin des dunes. The access to the jungle through the rue des Garennes (bridge) will also be blocked to all unregistered vehicles but it remains unsure whether parking will be allowed on the street.
Of course, the chemin des dunes gets more than a bit cramped during the week-end, thanks to to the massive arrival of British and Belgian citizens who come and distribute various items to the refugees. But let's not be duped: The real reason for this new rule is much more to diminish the help that refugees receive and make it more difficult for them to stay in Calais than to actually disengorge the access to the jungle.
The government is intent on disengorging Calais of its refugees and is doing everything it can to make it happen:
1) Systematic arrestation to any refugees seen close to the tunnel and deportation to a detention center, with either deportation back to their country, or to another European country in which they have finger prints, or eventual release. Even the best conclusion will have undeniably created added fear and stress for the refugees.
2) Vague offer to give a month's rest in a warm and dry place to any refugee who so desires (only a month!)
3) Encouragement to ask for asylum (but really, the governement doesn't make it very palatable!) especially when there are 300 refugees with papers who still live in the jungle...
and now the latest:
4) Blocking access of helpers and volunteers to the jungle and refugees, making it much more difficult to distribute much needed aid.
If you come regularly to the jungle to distribute, or if you intend to come soon, please contact l'Auberge beforehand (in a PM on this page) so we can give you the latest scoop.
