Brixton Windmill (not the pub) grand re-opening ceremony - 2nd May

I think it's fair to say, a much, much bigger crown attended than the organisers anticipated!

I didn't even expect a quarter that amount of people

Orla won the video set of Camberwick Green - I remember as a child being driven through Camberwell Green and being convinced that was the same place!

same as :D

Told b/f to look out for a kid with a cutlass or sword looking like a pirate and he said "but they're all carrying them" (the balloon swords!) :D

I told him it would probably be a plastic grey thing

So the word is that the sails didn't turn because some paperwork was missing, and they weren't allowed to have a Maypole on health and safety grounds.

FFS

Maybe if they'd declared it a Royal Wedding event, everything would have been granted :D

Are you home already or are you still there?

I made it out of cardboard - it had a painted golden handle (well yellow but use your imagination) and silver (ok tinfoil) blade.. it was the dog's bollocks as far as I'm concerned - given it was my first attempt at a child's fancy dress costume.. especially since it was all very last minute and improvised.

I'm very sorry to have missed it, and you :D

Had a really lovely afternoon although tbh after the parade nothing much seemed to happen for ages. Didn't hear any speeches, musicians just sat around for over an hour looking bored and expectations just withered away. Ah well, took a pint from the pub into the gardens and enjoyed the sun anyway.

Curry at Khans after was the perfect end to the day.

I know, but I don't think they anticipated that many people.

Barack Obama's speech was shite as well. :D Couldn't hear a word of it

(I managed to glimpse Chuka through a crack in people)

Nice event today - a bit busy, but very friendly. Would have liked to get inside the windmill, but hey, we can try again when it's not so packed. Great to see so many people turn out for it - and the proud faces of the Friends of Brixton Windmill & Gardens after all those years of hard work!

Bit dark as the sun was shining very brightly and my phone couldn't quite handle it, but the bloke in the white floral shirt is Chris Morris. Also saw Brit actor Toby Jones doing the rounds... It's not about the 'slebs though - a right proper community event, innit?!

I hope someone leafletted the slebs with mural leaflets!

Nice day, but I didn't stay long.

When will the windmill be open again? High days and holidays? Annual BW day?

Apparently it's open for tours again in two weeks. Shall post more details when I've asked, unless someone else does first...

Unfortunately, we were unable to turn the sails, as the millwright, who is the only person at the moment who can operate the mill, could not attend. However, he will be training several volunteers in the coming weeks, and on our next open days on 14 and 15 May (National Mills Weekend) the sails will turn and the provender mill will grind flour.

That was a lovely day. pretty funny that on the windiest brixton day for yonks the windmill didn't work tho :D

I second that Onket, the organizers are just local residents who have put in lots of hard work to make the event happen, they asked us to come up nearer to the entrance and play again as other acts/speakers were running late (due to the traffic build up);) they then asked us to stay a bit longer, and all our musicians, and attending parents, but most importantly our lorry driver ( big up to Norwood scaffolding!!!!!) agreed. we were only supposed to perform for the procession, due to other things going on we were asked to stop playing for a while, cos we are a bit noisy!!!! Like many of the people who performed we did this gig for free as we like to do as much community stuff as possible, and not just in our own borough as we have young people from 6 neighbouring ones at the moment!!Well done to all who played on the day Endurance Steel Orchestra you make me very proud!!:).

Ah, that explains it. It was a real shame that the sails didn't move and no one explained why as that was kinda the whole point of the day!

It was unfortunate that there were so few stalls there too - they could have raised a load of money for the Windmill with the amount of hungry/thirsty/souvenir seeking people there!

That said, I enjoyed the day very much. Great to see the place in such fine shape.

I reckon that's a bit harsh. I'm sure it was just that it was a lot more busy than expected. I really enjoyed it.

Definitely. I heard some of the people selling the pamphlets saying they never expected that many. According to their Twitter feed, they reckon around 2000 attended.

I reckon they expected a few hundred

It seems a lot of people went after hearing/seeing it on the BBC

Whilst I was outside the Windmill, I heard a woman say she'd lived in Brixton 20 years and never been to see it

Maybe they could hold an annual event, on Mayday of course, it would be very good for raising funds, good thinking editor!!
