Brixton food & drink news: new restaurants, bars, pop ups, cafes and more

So I went to a rave type thing at the Ton of Bricks last night. It sounded like the old 414 but with absolutely none of the sense of fun, soul and community. Could have been anywhere.

What sort of music was it? I miss the hard house and psy trance events they had there. And being greeted and looked after (and sometimes told off 😄) by Tony and Louise.

In terms of them hogging the pavement, is the old smoking area upstairs no longer in use?

It was kind of hard housey stuff. I'm not really a fan but it was the people and the staff that made the 414 so special. The spiral staircase has long gone as has the upstairs smoking area.

I could be wrong but I suspect that Market Row is going to struggle to find enough punters to pay £15 and I'd be surprised if the free Brixton Village gig lives up to expectations. Neither seem pretty great places for a NYE party, but maybe some people will love it.

Pergola will probably do well though, ghastly though it is.

Seems crazy that that the Dogstar, Market House*, Rum Kitchen and Brewdog are all now closed for NYE on CHL.

*I think it's unlikely that the ongoing issues there will be fixed in time.

What are the best events in Brixton on NYE?

I've no idea, to be honest. Hoots and the Effra are usually good and if the Effra Hall Tavern is doing something, that'll be a good place to see in the NYE. Dash the Henge in SE5 should be good too.

All the local bars and clubs used to send in details to Brixton Buzz but I guess PR budgets are tight because I've heard ne'er a whisper! If I get chance I'll have a look around and write up something.

For the first time, I'm not working in Brixton for NYE - instead I'll be DJing at Westow House in Crystal Palace.

The only thing that has tickled my fancy is a Breaks day event on new years day at Jamm. Hootananny had originally been billed as a funk, breaks and DnB sort of event on until 5am, but has now changed to a pretty uninspiring disco event like it has been for a few years now.

Crown and sceptre?
Could be the best bet - this is now an independent pub. Seems to keep long hours - I was there Monday lunchtime - but didn't ask them about Christmas Day opening.
Their website gives a contact number: 07857330348
They have this on Facebook:
