Brixton food & drink news: new restaurants, bars, pop ups, cafes and more

I'd be a bit pissed off if I lived by Effra Social with the outdoor but but then I guess they're also by Hootenanny so maybe it's just what you have to deal with

I see Lost in Brixton is now Pergola Brixton.

Doesn't surprise me, Pergola Paddington closed earlier in the year (lease expired), and Incipio (N used to do some shifts for them at one of their other venues) seems to like that branding for its rooftop venues, so I can see why they might want to change the name.

here is a glowing testament from its hey day in 1994
I remember its heyday as the mid/late 80s. IIRC it was the first ‘bah’ in Brixton, I think it was opened by the same people who ran the 20 Trinity Gardens restaurant.

Under the old licencing laws pubs shut at 3, but the Brasserie had a restaurant licence and could serve alcohol through the day, as long as it accompanied food.

I had quite a few afternoons in there, the rounds were something like ‘2 pints of lager, a Guinness, 2 bitters, a gin and tonic……and a toasted cheese sandwich, please.'

This BBC report shows how well Hootananny treat its customers.

And here's how the former Lost In Brixton looks like:

I mean I like Xmas, but I still think that putting decorations up in venues in mid November is horrendous - should be a condition of licenses that it's 1st Dec - 6th Jan only :D

They've put in another planning application for Freight (the rooftop bar on Pope's Road that was supposed to open five months ago).

Weirdly dilapidated inclusive graffiti at the entrance to Freight Island Manchester

Opulent interior though. Maybe this is Tom Curtis-Powley's vision of a resurrected Hacienda made from shipping containers?
The energy statement for Freight Brixton is a bit of a joke (how could it be anything else with a largely outdoor venue?)
The applicants is using recycled shipping containers
The use of photo-voltaic power is not going to reduce energy requirements in hours of darkness they say AND "The standard tools for assessing the energy use of buildings don’t apply to this type of project."

I have three things to say:
1. Good job UMIST has been demolished. My successor comrade students in Manchester would surely have been seduced into popping across the road to this haven of high brow hijabi hoody intellectuals!
2. I would have preferred the Hondo Tower to all this pissing about with shipping containers (Nul Points! from most on here for that)
3. Why don't the Reconstituted National Rail and The Mayor of London reinstate the platforms at Brixton Station allowing access to services to Peckham, Nunhead and Lewisham and all points east???
Never mind duplicating the Pop Brixton development in an even dodgier site!

Where between Kennington, Brixton and Streatham can I sit for a couple of hours doing work and using WiFi. I can eat lunch there.
Needs to be open on a Monday.

Pret. I frequently leech their WiFi for an hour or 2 for the price of a cup of tea.
I used to frequent Pret when I was working but since they got rid of most of the upstairs seating, I find the windowless basement a bit grim.

I wanted to keep supporting the independent San Marino, but the WiFi never works and they've often got music blaring.

Caffe Nero is now my choice if I need a lot of time for working on something. There's two loads of free WiFi too.

Where, upstairs at Morleys?
