Brixton food & drink news: new restaurants, bars, pop ups, cafes and more

Seems a shame. It was closed for several years from the mid 1980s (as the Atlantic).
Louis the coach driver tenant landlord had reportedly been cuckooed with dealers storing stuff upstairs in the premises.
Rozzers not too keen, and as with several other Brixton pubs pubs in the 1980s a police embargo followed. 3 pubs in the Loughborough Junction area permanently closed for similar reasons - the Harriers, the Crown (Mucky Duck) and the Green Man.
Maybe we need a list of pubs closed by the police?

Anyhow the authorities were receptive to the relaunch of the Atlantic pub as the Dogstar, though my memory was that many members of the black community saw it as a act of ethnic cleansing.
Talking mid 1990s here - and indeed the Dogstar was one of the businesses turned over in the 1995 Brixton riot 1995 Brixton riot - Wikipedia

Sorry to see this pub shut again - it would make a better Wetherspoons than the Beehive!

I remember the 1995 riot coming home to see a pinball machine from the Dogstar in the middle of the road. It wasn't one of the pubs bought out of Antic's administration.

I was outside the Dogstar in 95 when smoke was billowing out and kids were busy looting the cellar while an upturned car burnt itself out.

For years the place kept one of its melted projectors in place above the bar, I guess as some sort of 'war wound.'

I know a couple of people who are seriously interested but I've got a hunch the asking price must be sky high.
Why would they want to even bother? That area has become a shadow of what it once was. The focus of people going out around there is more towards eating and drinking in the village then heading to somewhere else like the Hoot or Effra Social? Don't think that strip of Coldharbour Lane will ever come back soon, but it will sometime in the future when trends change.

I totally believe that with the right promoter the Dogstar could do very well indeed.

I managed to get a decent crowd in there in June this year before they kept changing General Managers and fucking about.

The supermarket option seems all too plausible, unfortunately.
Do you know how fucking useless the Dogstar management were? The Chip Shop opposite would often put on DJs waaaay too big for the venue, so you think it would be an absolute no brainer to host an after party at the Dog till 4am, instantly getting the entire crowd to come over and probably able to get the DJ at a cheaper rate (seeing as they're literally across the road).

For the earlier part of the night play similarly themed music and bosh. One busy night.

Tramshed (or Tooting Tram and Social) in tooting closed yesterday as well. Another Antic venue that wasn’t included in the administration deal.

I see Barrio on Acre Lane is shuttered and a legal notice pinned to the door. Also Other Side Fried on Atlantic Rd reopens tonight as Buster Burgers.

"Barrio Brixton is now permanently closed. We still have incredible venues in Angel, Soho and Shoreditch. Visit our website for more information."
Shoreditch, Angel and Soho still open.

Maybe Brixton is getting too full of oldies and crumblies - which demographic can't support large numbers of expensive bars and restaurants?

Was in the Crown and Sceptre last Saturday night. Was absolutely rammed with the South American community.

I've been too - in the early part of such a function. Struck me as a very community gig.
But is that what is on offer in Barrios?

Yes, they've done great there - they found a niche and promoted it well and it underlines my point that if bars/venues provide what people actually want, they'll probably thrive.

Here's that new Buster's hamburger bar. It's actually just the same people doing a rebrand.

It's going to be all meat so fuck the place.

Buster's will be using Welsh Wagyu in its short, but enticing menu. There are three burgers on offer:

  • Hamburger – Wagyu beef patty, green peppercorn dijonnaise
  • Cheese Burger – Wagyu beef patty, American cheese, green peppercorn dijonnaise
  • Buster Burger - Wagyu beef patty, Buster’s sauce
All of the burgers will be served in a squishy potato roll that's being baked in-house.

I came to London in 1990. I remember going to the Atlantic on two occasions to see if I could get something to smoke. Someone must have recommended it to me as a place to try when all else failed, as I lived in Hackney at the time. On both occasions someone immediately came up to me and asked if I that was what I wanted, and I got what I consider an acceptably mediocre stranger deal. I think this might have been later than 1990, but it couldn't have been earlier.
