Black & White Stripey Tops - irrational dislike

My Merican man wears nowt but checked shirts or those kinda short sleeved airtex ones with collars? You’d hate his dress sense. I say dress sense in the loosest sense. Mind you I can’t talk, I have fuck all style, I model myself largely on All Saints. I greatly admire people with a sense of style and individuality.
I love that you style yourself on All Saints! :)

what saints have we got in horizontal stripes so far? imperialist soldiers, jimmy saville, royalty and abuser picasso

I went to a brilliant exhibition about this once can’t remember where it was, on the history of nautical influence on fashion, had a section on tattoos and a load of chronologically ordered stripey tops. Wonderful old black and white pictures of sailors that make you wish you were at sea in the 1920s playing an accordion.

I have a navy and white one in the proper sailing material that I like. Also when I went to check I still had it I found about 5 other striped tops of different colours. They're just a bit more interesting than plain tops. Although my body shape probably means that I shouldn't wear horizontal stripes I do love them.

Breton tops are less ubiquitous in menswear, I think. In womenswear, the navy Breton - as either a lightweight jumper or long sleeve T shirt - is almost part of the middle class mum uniform. It’s all very Boden/Joules. It’s undeniably a classic, and although I am dispositionally ill-disposed to navy blue, I do understand the appeal. I like them better on men because they’re more unusual.
Yeah I just popped onto this thread to say Boden.

And that Amber Butchart did an interesting series on Instagram during lockdown, including one which may make ska feel a bit queasy:
