Birkbeck Tavern to be turned into flats...Nooooo.

Petition signed.

Local paper article here:

http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/9880109.LEYTONSTONE__Campaign_launched_to_save_pub/

The deal isn't done yet, but most of the potential buyers are developers.

If the council denies planning permission for change of use then the developers will fuck off. It's up to the pub's local supporters to lobby the council to do that in every way they can think of.

But, then you'll have to put your money where your mouth is, i.e. over the bar if/when the pub re-opens as a pub; you will all have to put your money where your mouth is (should that be where your mouth's are?) i.e. over the bar.

No support means no pub, and then we'll all be at the mercy of Tim Martin (Wetherspoons)

It's too far away for me to be of any practical, buying-drinks-at-the-bar support, but this is a fine pub that deserves to be saved.

Locals! Support your local boozer or lose it!

Thanks for this thread - this is one of the best pubs in my local area, will definitely be signing the petition.
Maybe if the Antic pub group (the ones who run The Red Lion in Leytonstone & The Clapton Hart amongst many others) bought it, it wouldn't be too bad although I would prefer that if they did, they would keep it as is with the same management as it currently has.

It seems as if some bastard property developers are trying to buy this brilliant real ale boozer to turn into flats.

Please sign the petition.

It's the only decent pub in the area (apart from the King William IV and the new pop up pub in the Town Hall), has a wonderful character, serves Real Ale, has a brilliant beer garden....and should be saved.

Brodie's is better and has more ale choice. Good pub though, I agree.

Brodie's (William IV) has more choice of ales but the ambience of The Birkbeck has more charm (to me at least) and they have a rather tidy beer garden of which Brodie's has none save a view of the busy Leyton High Road and people coming/going from Tescos with their shopping.

Brodie's is more spit and sawdust for sure. It does have a small beer garden come building site out the back though. :D or that's what it looked like it was trying to be from a distance. :hmm:

Besides though, there's no real room for beer gardens and the such because the back houses a BREWERY! :D

Aye, are they still selling pints of real ale for £1.99 or does my memory serve me correctly, I think the last time I walked past the signage in the window had been amended to £2.19/pint?

Whatever, great value in such austere times.

The weaker stuff they brew (below 5%) goes for £2.35 where as the stronger stuff (6% up to and over 20%) is £3.30 ish or thereabouts.

Bump. Just been to a meeting about the possible closure. There's a Facebook page: "Save the Birkbeck" please join it. I name-checked Urban, loads of people there wewre aware of this haven. Was also interviewed by a Guardian journo about what the pub meant to me.

It really is a wonderful pub and should be saved...lots of ideas floated on how to do this...help.

I just saw this piece of good news in my inbox :)

This message is from Jess Dickenson who started the petition "Waltham Forest Council: Save The Birkbeck Tavern!," which you signed on Change.org.
I am so happy to report the successful sale of The Birkbeck Tavern to a publican (more details to follow) which means we are keeping our beloved pub - the best possible outcome!!!
Thank you all so much for your continued support throughout these uncertain times and hope to see you there soon :D

Hooray, hooray, hooray. Can't say how pleased I am. Thanks to all who signed and helped. Brilliant news. :)
