Greetings all from Edinburgh.
in London next week and thinking of coming along to the Maidstone game. Where’s best for a pre match pint?
Hi Iggy,
The ground opens about 6 and is one of the cheaper pints in Dulwich! Unlike games in Scotland you can get a pint in the ground and whilst watching the game too. Means you beat queues and can get some food in before the game.
My comment deleted. Not the right day to be saying what I said. Apologies.[edited]
If you like to try some local beers, then head for the Brick Brewery tap room by Peckham Rye station. It's then a 15/20 minute walk to the ground, or the P13 bus will take you direct from tap room to the ground. It's 20% off for DHFC season ticket holders / trust members / ticket holders on a match day, so make you pre-purchase your match ticket online to take advantage of this!
So depressing that £5 a pint is one of the "cheaper pints" in Dulwich! Within non-league circles, then £5 a pint is one of the most expensive. I can just about understand why pints are over £5 in Dulwich due to the high costs of being there, in particular commercial leases. However, doesn't explain why DHFC has to be that expensive (based on costs), but then it's not as if supporters are baulking at it going by queues for beer
In a nutshell, but as it's the going rate locally people are used to it. I don't know what the club pays the brewery for the beer but they have to make a profit on it. Also if the only cheaper pub is a Wetherspoons I'll happily pay extra than give Tim Martin money.Invisible hand of the market, baby. If people stop buying it then it'll have to change.
The bar’s too short, takes ages to get served.Quite telling that the pub closest to the ground has barely been mentioned in this thread. Not entirely sure why but the Cherry Tree has never really been popular with home fans.
You'll probably find more away supporters in there before the match, which is a shame as it's a good size, convenient for the train and a very short walk to the ground. I wouldn't put anyone off going but pints can be very pricy.
If travelling via Peckham Rye, the Montpellier and the Gowlett are both worth a stop on the walk to the ground.
I went in there coming back from Crawley v Sutton last Saturday evening. It was empty and I left half of the pint of Youngs Special, it was vile. The Gowlett is indeed a good pub, that one always slips my mind. I didn't mind The Cherry Tree before it was a Youngs, shame it is one now.
Double postI only ever used to drink in the clubhouse as it was reasonably priced and I liked that the profit was going into the club. However they have seen the profit to be made and im sure have hiked prices by 50p a pint the last 2 seasons. Whilst true £5 isnt particularly bad for the area, the nearby pubs have experienced bar staff who know what they are doing, which means you will get served in far less than half an hour, as can sometimes be the case in the clubhouse. Save yourself standing about like a lemon in a queue that doesn't move and go to a nearby pub before the game. The East Dulwich Tavern is the best option as other nearby pubs can be extortionate.
I went in the club bar after the Braintree match which is rare for me. No queue except for one other. The bar staff serving seemed more interested in chatting to him and after a minute or two informed me I could get served at the other end which I did. When I ordered what I wanted I was told that was available down the other end.
I’m not apologizing for giving him mouthful. This after spending the best part of the first half queuing outside.
