The Day the Earth Caught Fire from 1961 has a rather ridiculous premise but remains a classic slab o' sci-fi. One of the first films I'm aware of to centre on humanity experiencing catastrophic climate change.

Rear Window and Die Hard with a Vengeance were the first that came to mind as they are both amongst my favourite films, but you've beaten me to them. My third recommendation would be Beautiful Thing, which I've referenced before as the only romantic film this miserable old cunt actually likes. I'll likely watch all three in the very near future whilst being unable to sleep. Imaginitive East German terrorists, convalescing photographers and teenage scallies - something for everyone I think.

I don't think it's explicitly in a heat wave, but I always think of Stand By Me as taking place on a few brutally hot summer days.
