I've had my work surface changed since I made the last batch.

that looks like one of strung out's turd-bagels! this thread is full of all kinds of wrongness, and wronguns. *sigh* :(

I think strung out probably just squatted down and pooed in a circle.

If he offers you a chocolate bagel, just say no.

The bagels from any street corner stand are better and fresher than any bagel ever sold in the UK.

Stuff and nonsense. Some of the bagels sold on the street corners of NY are plain nasty. There again they're often better than the truly awful street corner pretzels sold at similar vendors.

Give me something from Beigel Bake or the other one in Brick Lane over most of them anyday. I'm not too sure why there's a bit of a tendency to knock British food as inferior - the UK's got some fine bagel bakers too

We're just going to have to disagree on this, I'm afraid. The Brick Lane bagel places are totally overrated. Their products are chewy shite.

bagels are supposed to be really chewy aren't they? though i'm afraid i'm so used to the supermarket ones and the ones i made that i have no idea how they're supposed to be actually.

not since bagelgate have bagels been so controversial. there was a time when mere mention of them would get you banned.

Bagels are meant to be dense and chewy to a large extent - a result of their style of preparation. That's like bemoaning that your chewing gum is too sticky - it's what separates a bagel from a bread roll with a hole.

FWIW I sometimes prefer the lighter, more easily crisped non-authentic versions too. But claiming that 'any' NY bagel is 'better and fresher' than their London equivalents is hyperbolic duck and uninformed nonsense by any standards. Beigel Bake and its nearby rival are very highly rated by the bagelasseurs mind - you'll find international, detail obsessed plaudits all over the web.

What happened there then?

an ex-poster (currently still to be found elsewhere) had a penchant for posting pictures of bagels in the middle of serious debates. he got banned eventually and the mere mention of a bagel was frowned upon by mods and usually enough to get a thread binned...

They do, though :(

They might actually be delicious, but I'd definitely insist that strung out tried one first.
