If it meant the ticket price was reduced to something slightly reasonable then I'd be up for it. It's not exactly rocket science driving a train so I can't see why not.

The ratio is one driver to 400 + passengers, rather lower than that on a Borismaster, so I doubt it would make much difference to your pocket. Presumably you'd appreciate someone aboard who can deal with anything that goes wrong whether or not they also have to "drive" the thing

Paris has had automated, unstaffed, underground Métro trains for over a decade - Line 14.

The tube is not the Paris Metro or the DLR. Most tube lines are far longer, have trains that travel faster and much of it is in the open with tracks that are easily accessible and difficult to secure. In many places lines share track with other tube lines and with national rail. The Metro, as far as I can remember, and the DLR do not share tracks and the track itself is less accessible being in tunnels or elevated. Automated trains are fine but there is a need of a well trained professional just in case something goes wrong. You wouldn't want, presumably, to travel on a 747 to New York or even the 37 to Putney Heath without someone at the front, so what's the attraction of going from Leicester Square to Hounslow Central with 500 fellow passengers but nobody to deal with emergencies.
