Yes, gutting for him. PB and European record, has done the best he ever has. Possibly went off too fast, but the guy who beat him had to run the 4th fastest time ever to beat him
To put it into context, he just ran the 5th fastest time EVER and still finished 2nd.
43.03 - Wayde van Niekerk - 1992

43.18 - Michael Johnson - 1999

43.29 - Butch Reynolds - 1964

43.40 - Quincy Hall - 2024

43.44 - Matthew Hudson-Smith - 2024

I think that Wayde van Niekerk ran the current 400m world record of 43.03 at the 2016 Olympics, rather than in 1992 (when he was born).

Just caught up with this. Amazing!

I know nothing about discus but sometimes you can see they are really straining but he looked smooth as anything. And quick!
Oh me neither! He’s really good at throwing stuff 😂

He looked really shell shocked. I don’t think anyone - least of all him - expected him to do that. I love the shock results and the unexpected heroes the most

There’s been some athletes from non traditional throws nations (central / Eastern European countries plus the US are historically dominant) winning global golds at javelin lately so good to see this spreading to discus too

Looking forward to the women's heptathlon this morning. Is Thiam going to be too hard to beat and what can KJT do? I'll be looking out for Auriana Lazraq-Khlass, the French athlete who I didn't know of before the recent European Championships but her reactions and celebrations to PB performances were a delight. She won the silver medal there so be interesting to see how she does here.

An update on Lamecha Girma; it seems he was unconscious the whole time on the track :( There's been a photo of him this morning from hospital sitting up and alert so fingers crossed he's on the mend.

I didn't actually see the fall until this morning, but yeah looked really rough, and all the concern makes even more sense now. Good news, though.

But, also...

Where did I get the idea her surname was spelt Thiem?? I even 'corrected' myself from spelling it Thiam last night

Anyway, always enjoy the Heptathlon, so hopefully will be able to catch quite a bit over the next two days.

That's shocking. Usually Jamaica and USA are dead certs for it.
Yeah, US were dominant in the first SF (which also saw GB through in 3rd, behind S. Africa), but the second SF was slower, so Jamaica's time in 4th wasn't enough.

Very bizarre.

Brutal stuff early in the Heptathlon; USA's Hawkins failed to register a high jump score, effectively nuking her overall chances in just the second discipline :(

You just got me thinking, the only thing that comes to mind is the tennis player Dominic Thiem 🤔

Jamaica were indeed shocking, 2 out of the 3 changes were complete mess ups. It was bizarre that both had the incoming runner holding the baton on the opposite side/hand to the one the outgoing runner had extended.

Shame about Hawkins come the high jump, coming in at too high a mark? Similar to Molly in the pole vault but still - heights well within their capabilities so still baffling when that happens. Even more in the Heptathlon, you think just get a mark in to get some points.

KJT looks quite relaxed at the moment which is great. I just hope she had a good two days, I mean of course I want her to win but I also want her to be in a good place within herself
Agree. She's a sensitive soul is KJT. Doesn't seem to have quite the same killer instinct as Jessica Ennis had. She is doing brilliantly so far, she is obviously at the top of her game fitness wise and getting to the top of the board early on takes a bit of the pressure off I think.

Didn't see it but what you are describing is how you are meant to pass the baton?
