Fffffffucking hell, DAS looked like she could be really on for something there, and Neita too, and then how close was the finish for bronze??

Thomas, just... yeah, dominant.

I did think Gabby Thomas would win easily - she was so dominant in the semis

Makes me wonder how much the 100m/200m double is fatiguing really.
Yes that’s been crossing my mind just now, DAS ran one race less, I think both the British women are probably better at 200 too.

I watched the US Olympic trials in June and unfortunately she did enter the 400m but withdrew. I hope she does concentrate on doubling up as she's perfect for both imo.
Thats interesting. I presume that’s why she is not on the 4x4 team too (as far as I understand it). Also not on the 4x1 either

Which I found odd but maybe Wikipedia I looked at was wrong

Heh, see, again, absolutely following you and it's making sense until... if you can run 3:28 and they can only run 3:30, surely their sprint doesn't matter, because they'll still get there 2 seconds later than you? Like, over the course of the race everyone's pace evens out to "3:30 p/1500m" or whatever.

I mean, clearly not! :D

That said, I appreciate that it isn't as exact a science as that, and perhaps you simply can't predict anyone's time with enough reliability to be confident in a "you do what the fuck you like, I'll run my pace and get there first" strategy. Again, if nothing else because track traffic may disrupt your 'pure pace'.

Also appreciate the explanation and attempts to guide me to it. Think it's one of those things where I do sort of get it, but at the same time it still doesn't really make sense to me. There's just some cognitive thing that isn't quite clicking into place yet.
Because people's fastest times are run in race conditions, so you can't divorce that time from the race. It's a bit like saying why doesn't a WR holder, just replicate their record at the Olympics - (of which there's a long thread on letsrun.com). As others have said their is drafting, and pacemakers in other racing meets. If a WR holder just went out by themselves then there's the chance first that they'd blow up, and second that someone would just draft them all the way - rather like Ingebrigtsen kind of found out tonight.

That isn't to say some people try runnning more their own race, either from the front, or from the back (Dave Wottle - Munich 800m, Kelly Holmes - Athens 800m)..

And if you're David Rudisha you do manage it from the front.

Neitta is getting better and better. Dina just always seems to fade at the end. Still, should be something to look forward to in the 4X100.
She’s definitely one to watch. She’s really, really determined too. Asher-Smith just doesn’t seem to have the pace any more.

I’m reserving today’s fangirling for Yavi who ran a blinder of a race - so clever and she’s just a bloody joy as well. Just what the world needs on a drizzly Tuesday.

Ah, I'm not sure about the relays tbh. You'd think she'd be an asset and shoe-in for both relays. I hope we see her again 🙏

Of the medalists, only Julien Alfred obviously had run already, so her achievements are even more impressive. Gabby Thomas and Brittany Brown were fresh and Dina/Daryl were probably a bit fatigued so have still performed credibly in the 200.

Another great "sums up the story" picture :D

(Though obv misses out Nuguse)

All the runners that fell in the 5000m have been advanced to the final inc George Mills. There's going to be 20 runners in that race

Posted this in the general thread by mistake
What happened in the 5000m that people were falling???

Is a good way to get yourself re-excluded if the organisers were minded to give those who fell a chance to get reinstated.
