Appletv gen2 in 2021 - is it still useful?

MrCurry

right after this urgent rest
I upgraded to a newer Appletv so I have my old A1469 2010 Appletv gen 2 spare. I wanted to put a smart dns set up on it so it thinks it’s in U.K. (it isn’t) and use it for iplayer, itv hub, all4 etc, but none of them are supported. It basically just shows sky news, Netflix and some other BS apps like crunchyroll and the ios 7.8 it runs has no access to App Store, so no possibility to add new apps. 😭

So what is this thing good for now? Mirroring from an iPhone / iPad, but what else?

I tried jail breaking it with firecore seasonpass, hoping to get an untethered ios 5.3 onto it and perhaps XBMC after that, but that‘s not working (seasonpass fails with connectivity problems).

Anyone got any good ideas? Or a suggestion of a tech forum where people who are skilled with this kind of stuff might hang out (not casting aspersions on this place 😁 )?

Little else tbh. I’ve got a Gen 3 and the last useful thing about it was Apple TV+ but now that’s on every other device including Android TV now it’s basically not even worth having there - not even for screen mirroring due to the lag.

Hockey puck perhaps?

Yeah. I just wish I could get iplayer and all4 working on it. I’m using a firetv stick for those at the moment and it’s the most hateful, unreliable POS ever with a user interface designed by an 8 year old.

But unless I can figure a way to jailbreak this ATV I’m screwed I guess. Not even sure I could get iplayer and all4 working on it once jailbroken to be fair.

I think you can get a Google Chromecast right now for £20 if you wanted to get rid of the firestick. I almost exclusively use Android TV now and being able to cast stuff is useful. Plus BBC and C4 will work a lot nicer than on anything jailbroken.

I’ve been using a firestick over the last few days and it’s quite laggy even despite not being that old (plus shoving Amazon everything in your face at every given opportunity)

My Apple gen 2 has been sitting in its box for the last 7 years utterly redundant. It’s only positive was that the interface is quick but with no access to an AppStore it’s worthless . Still got a Roku somewhere but that too is redundant.
