Apple iPhone and related items (cont.)

Im on the Apple upgrade program and tempted to get a 15 pro but only because its cheaper than what im paying for my 14 pro currently

Although if i stick with my 14 pro another 9 months I can upgrade and keep my 14 rather than handing it back

Well, after 15 years I’m dealing with the first lost iphone. My dear significant other rolled in drunk last night without their iPhone. We’ve spent the day watching the phone move around Rio wondering if it was under the seat in a taxi and not found. Anyway, it’s marked as lost and has my phone number on the screen. We are at the cellphone shop getting a new SIM to reactivate an old phone until I get to London to buy a new one. Now my phone is ringing every 5 minutes from “Apple service centre” saying the phone has been found. Wonderful. All I have to do is enter the screen lock code to recover it! Isn’t that wonderful!!
DONT DO THIS!
I wish they’d just make a ransom demand.
I think we will be going to the police station after this to report it stolen as the police here still do basic crime stuff.

A Slight diversion from the usual, "what is the next model to buy" theme.

In a tidying frenzy I have stumbled upon the box of "just in case backup" iPhones

They range from a 3 to a 1st generation SE, by way of 4, 5 and 6 (7 phones in all).
Decided I have no need for any of them , except possible the SE

They are in mixed condition: a couple with cracked screens, a couple seem perfect. Some have battered cases

What is the best thing to do with them?
I assume they have no material value.
Where is the best place to donate them , or are they only good for taking to the tip?

(Seeing which ones I can boot up to wipe, otherwise they get a hammer taken to them )

It's so dumb isn't it. The phone is essentially bricked and its only value is for selling off as parts but it would be a lot simpler and more honorable to just return it, and you'd no doubt have compensated the finder to have made it worth their while.

Oxfam?

Thanks
Apologies, in hindsight I realised I could have probably discovered that myself, without troubling the U75 hive mind

Have wiped the 6, only to discover (having pressed the "yes I am sure" button twice) that it was called "Nick Car phone" and had about 110GB of music on it - hopefully nothing not saved elsewhere

Tying these to themes together, my other half is loving their new iPhone 8 with 4-hour battery life and a cracked screen that fortunately was in the bottom of THAT drawer. I will be in London in a month and can buy myself a new phone and I will hand on my current 12 with a 6-hour battery life.

I’ve traded a couple of phones in. I think apple stores will safely dispose of old tech that has no value..that’s what I did with a dead laptop, although I did pay to have the shop remove the hard drive.

So, the question now is SE, 13 or 14 for my next phone? I object to buying the most current version on principle.

Not what you asked but..

YMMV, but you could get the battery replaced on one or the other. I have used iSMASH in the past and they seem good. iPhone 12 battery is £49 on their website and they often have money off deals

Thanks..maybe that’s the way to go, a new phone and replace the battery in this one.

I also went to iSmash and got a new battery for my 11 which my Mum now has.

pseudonarcissus if you're in the UK soon, you could consider getting a refurb iphone 13. There's some decent prices right now, and for my money there's not a huge amount of difference except for processing power between the 13 and 15.

it appears iSmash (and others) don't do replacement batteries for the iPhone 12 mini...just for the 12 and the 12 maxi

other than the SE and the 6 they are are all effectively WEEE now

I recently lost my Iphone 13 (Found later at a friends house)
Straight away I opened my laptop to look at "find my phone" on Icloud. I was not logged in to Icloud. I know my password so entered this. The only way that I could log in to Icloud was by Apple sending a code to the Iphone that I had lost ! I don't have an Ipad or other apple device.
What use is find my phone ?

You can set up other options iirc.

I don't iPhone, but have an iPad and a Mac and my Find My is always set up to message the iPad first, but then I can select send a text or email if I don't have the iPad with me.

Assume you haven't set these secondary options up?

My iPhone updated its clock mid flight the other day to reflect the different time zone I’d entered. But it had been on airplane mode since takeoff and was not connected to any wifi network, so I’m genuinely puzzled as to how it knew to do it. It didn’t happen on the return flight so not necessarily a new feature from the latest update.

I could be wrong but I think gps still works in airplane mode

As I’m sure many others do, I regularly google any actors I see in a film or show that ring a bell but I don’t know where from. For the last few weeks I’ve noticed that sometimes when I’m looking at google images of a female actor typically at a red carpet event, the dress they are wearing is momentarily illuminated when you first swipe into the picture.

Weird as fuck, and it seems to happen with darker coloured dresses only. I can’t work out why it does that. Has anyone else observed it?

You sure it’s not the image isolate and cutout feature?

I don’t google them, i IMDb them. Much more effective

why? letterboxd is just opinions, and wiki is less comprehensive and reliable
I find IMBD less comprehensive than Wiki, personally. If I need to know the cast of a film or TV program, in my experience Wiki is far more likely to have all the information. Also, IMDB just isn’t navigable. Too many dead ends, broken links, and circularity.
