Apple iPhone and related items (cont.)

ON a serious note. I actually can't wait for USB-C to be more of a thing and I can finally do away with keeping lightning cables nearby, now that my macbook, ipad, monitor, external power bank, and two sets of headphones are all USB-C I can almost feel an age coming where I don't need to see another lightning cable again. I'm certainly not going to be updating my iphone 13 any time soon though without a more compelling reason. I use wireless charging most of the time anyway.
I will mourn the loss of the Lighting cable.
They should have upgraded them to keep pace with USB speeds but physically it's a superior shape.
So much easier to clean fluff out of the port. No tab thing to snap.

Yeah right. I've gone through countless lightning cables over the years which have frayed just like any other cable, and even more annoyingly just randomly stopped working for no apparent reason. I can't really say I'm going to miss lightning one bit.

I have a 12 and I’ll be rather annoyed if it doesn’t last me for several years yet.
4 to 5 years is a reasonable figure fora phone before it gets relegated to bakc up / kids device as they and even with right to repair unless one of the specific tofu knitting yogurt weaver's phones are not easy to upgrade i nthe way a desktop computer is...

Im non poised by it but I’m on the apple upgrade program, so in November I can either give my 14 pro back and get a 15/15 pro, or I can just carry on what I’m paying for another 9 months and own my 14 pro outright.

I wouldn’t bother if it was the same price but the 15 pro is actually £5 a month cheaper 😂

I guess the balance is trying work out how much my 14 pro will be worth next august and seeing how much that would knock off a 15 pro if I’m upgraded then, but then it wouldn’t be worth doing until sept/October when they’d announce a new one anyway.

In all honesty the only apple thing I actually want is a new MacBook to replace my 2012 one but I definitely can’t afford that right now. I wouldn’t mind a new watch as I’ve gone from being a bit non plussed about it to wearing it all the time, but my watch is adequate.

I had a 6 for what I thought was yeeeeears and years.

Just checked. It was actually only 4 years.

They managed to release 6 generations of iphone in that 4 year span. Which is why it must have felt longer.

Oh, I meant the connector itself

I never had an issue with the design, but I took massive umbrage with the way Apple would suddenly stop recognizing non-official cables. Especially when I was forever having to buy longer cables owing to the very short ones they provided in the box. It was a massive swizz they had going on and for all their eco-friendly claims about using recycled materials, they knew full well that adopting a non-proprietary standard ages ago would've been a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly.

Still no fast charging?

It might frazzle you first.

France has ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation.
On Tuesday, the French watchdog which governs radio frequencies also told the tech giant to fix existing phones.
The ANFR has advised Apple that if it cannot resolve the issue via a software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country.

France’s ban of iPhone 12 sales due to radiation fears could have Europe-wide implications, regulators in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands have warned.

Apple will have to recall all iPhone 12 phones in France if corrective updates do not work, the country’s National Frequency Agency (ANFR) said on Tuesday, after tests revealed electromagnetic radiation that was 40 per cent above the legal limit.

On Wednesday, the Dutch digital watchdog said it was looking into the ANFR report and is seeking an explanation from the US tech giant.

“A norm has been exceeded. Fortunately, there is no acute safety risk but we will very shortly have a talk with producer,” Angeline van Dijk, an inspector with the Nederlandse Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur (RDI), told the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad.

“The Netherlands attaches as much importance as France to safe use of mobile phones. Mobile phones must comply with European norms.”

Belgium and Germany followed with statements of their own on Thursday, with network regulators saying that the French procedure could have a guiding function for the whole of Europe.

I plug it in when I go to bed, then it lasts all day. Why would I need faster charging
Because it's really, really bloody handy when you need to recharge quickly when you're out. But I know the Apple way is to make out it's a useless pointless feature until the company finally adopts it and then it's truly amazeballs/changes everything etc.

Maybe my usage just isn’t that high, but I’ve honestly never run out during a day.

fast charging is great. notice it's low, 10 minutes later it's not. ideal for those of us who are disorganised.

also - leaving your phone on charge all night is not good for the battery.

Not true.

erm, no it is true. that's precisely why they've come up with something to try and limit the damage. but, a) "in certain situations" and b), leaving it connected so it has to stop/start will still cause the battery to work more than if you didn't leave it plugged in overnight. which will in turn mean wear for the battery.

So how is my battery being charged in two bursts automatically overnight any different to me doing it manually twice in the day

Imagine being so lost in the Apple fanyboy universe that you end up playing down the obvious usefulness of being able to charge your phone quicker. Mad.

Oh, and pbsmooth is right

This article does point out that slower 5w chargers might be better if you charge overnight.

There was a pre-pre-order process to go through to ensure that you could pre-order efficiently at 1pm today when pre-orders opened.

The Apple Store is now down.

Apple finally put USB-C in the new iPhone, and now we know why it's limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds

"Apple's site indicates it will be offering a 20W USB-C charger (sold separately, of course)—slower than the common 25W charging used in Android phones. But the really bad news here is that the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 is still limited to USB 2.0, meaning it tops out at 480 Mbps transfer speeds. That's ridiculous for an $800 smartphone in the year 2023."

They didn't want to relinquish that lucrative lightning port market. Now they have to find new ways to milk their user base. Never mind that this creates surplus cable waste. Eco-friendly my arse.

I assume most people just don't copy large amounts of data to their phone this way anymore. Still seems bonkers?

Yeah, exactly. Not a big thing but they did mention it at the event when talking about the Pro, so they've obviously considered it.
More pertinent for most people is still the power charging limitations.
