Despite the fact that loads of people have been clogging up the internet pipes moaning about how shitty Apple’s Time Capsule wireless storage thingy, Apple themselves have only just decided to acknowledge that, indeed, there is a problem with it.
Thousands of people saw valuable data vanish when the devices failed to power up. Now, Apple is offering free replacements… but there’s a catch.
If you have one of these devices which has a serial number that lies within the range of XX807XXXXXX – XX814XXXXXX, then you’ll be able to get them replaced or repaired for free. You can do this in person or send it off. That said, if you want your data to be saved, then you’ll need to go to one of those horrible Apple Stores where meek people in linen trousers all silently grin at each other.
What about those of you with a cruddy Time Capsule that doesn’t have the relevant serial number? Well, chances are you’ll have to take on Apple with a lawsuit.
In a support document which has been hidden away in the hope that no-one will notice it (which you can find HERE), Apple have managed to mew that indeed, “Some Time Capsules sold between approximately February 2008 and June 2008 may not power on or may shut down unexpectedly after starting up.” Or, they’re faulty and fucked to you and me.
So bad is the problem is that a dedicated site has been set up called Time Capsule Memorial Register and The Guardian launched an investigation into the problem 9 months ago with Apple crossing their collective arms and shouting LA LA LA LA LA – I CAN’T HEAR YOU!
The chap who runs the site has noted that “the Time Capsule thermal design is flawed, regardless of the serial number,” and with reports suggesting that 20% of the failed devices had serial numbers which lie outside the boundaries set by Apple, we could well see more bad press for the electronics giant. All this on top of the iPhone4 gubbins about people ‘holding it wrong’.
