Apple iPad 2018 & Apple Pencil - handwriting recognition

I bought a 2017 model iPad last year after my iPad 2 started to show battery issues etc. (got £95 for it from CEX! Screw you Craig and your i'll drop you £25 for it) Anyway....

Slightly newer model is out in 2018 that supports the Pencil - am I missing much?
The main thing I want to know about is handwriting conversion - can I take notes on it and it will automagically turn them into a typed document?

Cheers. As it happens I'm in the Trafford Centre and have just been testing the pencil out using an app called Nebo. Works really well.

I think I'm sold on getting a newer iPad w/Pencil after payday unless there's an even newer release soon...I'll Google
