It also doesn’t take a genius to create their own VPN. In the first instance maybe the plan is just to create a reasonable degree of friction.

Not that I think it will work.

Possibly, but it feels like there are few truths across the history of humanity with more evidence to support them than the fact that people will endure a great degree of friction if they even suspect there might be sexy bits at the end of it.

For some, of course, it's actually a bonus.
