All porn sites must 'robustly' verify UK user ages by July 2025

Seriously though .. How are they going to do it .. ?

Companies independent of porn sites that delete all identifying information at the end of a transaction and provide the user with an anonymised age pass linked to their registration with said company.

Possibly.

It cannot possibly work. How is going to work. I can tell the VPN I'm in Chile, New Zealand, fucking outer Mongolia... it's absurd

I had no idea there was such a thing as age restrictions on YouTube

I have only ever encountered one blocked video on there - i didn't bother with signing in

when it was the tories' idea, they were talking about making using a VPN illegal - has that idea blown over?

There'll be a workaround to that... and I highly doubt they'll try to make VPNs illegal as massive corporates use them at times too

When I buy vape juice online, I get an email saying that I have been age verified. Presumably they use my (debit) card details to check with a data base of some sort? Anyone know for certain?

This is only for UK users according to the OP?

Sorry, was talking in context of an article that was talking about universal checks. My bad.

Yeah, if the site was required to check only UK users then this is obv a dud.

I’m sure there would be other workarounds anyway.

A quick google found various sites saying they only took credit cards as debit cards can't be used to prove age.

The internet is unpoliceable. Which is its beauty. Even my mum can use a VPN, and she's 78. I really really hope she's not using it to access pornhub though.

I suppose they could run your details through a credit reference agency like experian or equifax? I think that might be able to verify a dob but i may be wrong.

It also doesn’t take a genius to create their own VPN. In the first instance maybe the plan is just to create a reasonable degree of friction.

Not that I think it will work.

I've got a couple of letters from my ISP down the years for torrenting, when I don't use a VPN but I believe it's pretty much unenforcable. Just scare tactics.

Yeh I've had like 5 overall over multiple houses and it's been oh yeh, nevermind. Then when vpns happened we just used that. For 25 years of almost continuously downloading its hardly high risk. At least it doesn't take a day to get an episode of friends tho.

Another robust solution from the UK government

Much like the new laws banning nitrous…

‘Please explain using a minimum of 20 characters why you are purchasing 3 massive canisters of laughing gas’

‘I’m really into home baking lol’
I am Heston Blumenthal

they tried it on a few years back. For fairly innocuous stuff to be honest - some music vids IIRC. I just chose not to send them my data and they gave up and came round to my way of thinking. I'd had an account there for like 15 years or whatever and also used google pay to buy drugs, so they must have had an idea that I wasn't a youngster
