Air India was forced to make an emergency landing at Stansted Airport after a 'bomb threat'

The huge passenger jet was escorted into London by two RAF Typhoon fighter jets.

The airline tweeted that it had made the precautionary landing in London shortly before 10.30am today.

It is not yet clear whether it is connected to a sonic boom widely felt and heard in Derby.

Stansted Airport and the Ministry of Defence has been approached for comment.

I may have been too early to suggest it was a false alarm, apparently investigations continue, the plane is parked in an isolated area, allowing the runway to re-open.

What exactly is the point of a fighter escort anyway? The only thing I can think of is to be ready to shoot it down over a less populated area. Which is not exactly reassuring to anyone on the plane.

I think that's the idea, if it's hijacked & start heading towards, say, London, the fighter planes could bring it down.

The QRA has two jobs - one is to shoot the thing down (better that 200 people die in a field in Essex than 1000 in a shopping centre/train station when 200 tonnes of aviation fuel piles into it at 500mph), and the other is to act as a sobriety inducer: passenger is a twat, cabin crew point to QRA and say 'you see that grey thing out there with the white pointy things hanging off the wings - time to sit down and shut the fuck up...'.

Plane had been delayed by 3 hours before it took off so somebody obviously failed to engage brain before mouth.
