African Cup of Nations 2024

Salah's hamstring gone was a suggestion? :(

I watched the first one on BBC, was entertaining game really back and forwards attacking.

Only one they've shown so far though :(

Love this tournament (and the fact every team has to have a nickname).
Hoping that The Stallions, The Copper Bullets and The Blue Sharks make a good showing.

Another 'who dunnit' . Posters might remember last year when the Russian pro war military blogger was blown up in St. Petersburg by a 'gift' delivered by a young woman. The young woman on trial , has said that she was offered a passage to Ukraine and a job as a journalist by someone from the Ukranian Intelligence . Darya Trepova said she was acting under orders from a man in Ukraine whom she knew as "Gestalt" whom she was introduced to by a Ukraine based far right activist called Roman Popov. 'Gestatlt' had been sending her messages and money with instructions for some months .

Her husband has written an open letter in which he asks Kyiv-based Russian far right activist Roman Popkov to admit that he duped Trepova into delivering the bomb. Popkov, telling her she was to deliver to the venue what she was told was a tracking device. Popov, the former leader of the National Bolsheviks , denies any involvement and says although he knew Trepova from Twitter ( she followed his accounts) that the Russians have made Trepova come up with this story.
Cool, but what's this got to do with Cape Verde's very good chances of winning their group stage after two matches?

He was never offside.

Not got Sky so listening to a lot of this on the radio as I quite like it old school. I usually tune into Zambian national radio as those guys are a laugh (until it comes to national coach Avram Grant and they don't find him funny) but the only Nigerian station I can find for the current match has got moderately loud music playing in the background of the commentary. Weird.

Currently:

Equatorial Guinea 2 Ivory Coast 0

Hosts looking like they are going to go out.

edit: 3-0

4-0 now, and Equatorial Guinea look far more likely to be the next scorers too
But not out. I agree with the dudes on Nigerian radio that there will be two third placed teams worse than Cote D'Ivoire.
You'd be looking at some bizarre results to happen. Mozambique would have to beat Ghana, Tanzania beat DR Congo and Zambia beat Morocco.

I don't know, they were awful tonight and looked it even at 0-0. That said, if they did qualify then they'd almost certainly win it.

There's a good chance if they squeeze through, they will luck out and get Cape Verde in the Round of 16 who are good but probably the weakest group winner.
What happened anyway? 4-0 is a mighty thumping. Was it a case of Equatorial Guinea versus 11 egos?

It was very akin to Brazil's semifinal humiliation in 2014 - they looked to be playing the occasion as well as the opposition, everyone seemed nervous and having a couple of goals ruled out for offside (correctly) made things worse.

Equatorial Guinea were excellent though, should have made it 5-0 at the end and for most of the second half were going through them at will.

Well at the moment Egypt are doing their best to gift Côte d'Ivoire one of the best third place slots. I didn't expect Cape Verde to try that hard this game as they're already group winners.

Ghana were 2-0 up and heading for the next round, but are going out after Mozambique scored 2 late goals.
I didn't check the final result; just assumed they were through. At one point it was Egypt who looked like they were screwing things up in that group. Nice work all round, Cape Verde.,
