A Christmas Carol

sojourner

Where's me readers?
The one with Stephen Graham in it. Anyone start watching that last night? I loved it, thought the contemporary cultural references were spot on, and it's nicely in keeping with Dickens' emphasis on topical events and critique of shit social/employment conditions.

About perfect for these times.

Finding it a bit meh. Guy Pearce is good in it, but there's something a bit flat/ordinary about it. Not sure whether to continue watching it tonight.

i like it...

dickens was always a bit of his era so at least this version is not so twee

Watched this last night and really liked the look of it.The ghost of Christmas Past having a bonfire of centuries of forgotten Christmas trees was ace as were the factory scenes which,I agree, would have met with Dickens' approval. Not sure about the cycle of abuse stuff and how well it fits in with the religious theme. Also can't understand why Scrooge is channelling Chris Packham?Overall this is good TV I think.

I thought that was bloody excellent.

Great reinterpretation of the story and yeah, like I fucking know anything, one that I think Dickens would have approved of. Holding a mirror up, eh?

Great stuff.

Ah yeah I can see that, but I also thought he was doing an accent that very occasionally sounded a bit like Arthur Shelby, I kept expecting him to roar "the peaky focking bloinders!" at the end of each episode :D

Edit: Oh and yeah I really liked it, despite slight occasional accent woes from Scrooge I thought it was really good.

I thought it was intelligently done, and that Dickens would love it if it were an original work, but that it’s an odd thing to do, to rewrite a story in this way.

I guess it makes sense (or is a must, even) to be adventurous and bold when you write a new screenplay for a story that everyone knows and has probably had more film and TV adaptations already than any other in history.
