Wristwatches, watches and watch-like gadgets

How old are you guys!! C'mon, G Shock interface hasn't changed since the 80s!
Except now "there's an app for that" - so just connect it to your phone every now and then for a time correction (although Casio are currently making users to migrate from the G-shock app to the Casiowatch app (same shit, different colour) )

oh - snaparoony (but yellow) - incoming /watchescirclejerk moment:

regrettably the digital bits are too small for my old eyes (and the alarm is near silent).

I find the Sub is the daily wear as most comfortable, practical and robust. Never been serviced, works fine
I hear they are hard to get now because of artificial supply contstraints. Got mine 10 years ago when it was possible to walk into an AD on whim and walk out with a new toy 15 minutes later
That's the great thing about Rolex, their marketing.

How can you make the best part of a million watches a year, have so many shops selling them (but not selling them), a massive waiting list, huge prices and people queing up for one just due to the name. Incredible!

Ocean 39 Double-GREEN Ceramic premium Diver Watch

Here's a Swiss movement Steinhart, a 39mm Sub homage (Really don't know how they get away with it personally) for 630 Euros.
I'd imagine an awful lot of Rolex buyers don't even care or know about the movement, but that marketing is superb.

Having said that, I would like a blue Milgauss if I was spending megabucks on a watch. :)

wow that Steinhart looks good. More so since the Hulk sub is very rare / no longer made / whatever

TBH the only Rolexes I like are the sub and the Daytona (which aint gonna happen for >£20k)

I always wonder how copyright works on watches, or doesn't - that Steinhart is really similar - and there are millions of lesser "tributes" (Seiko Pepsi's etc etc)

Only ever read good things about Steinhart, their quality is supposedly superb.

I've toyed with the idea of this late '60s Rolex homage (not sure of the model)

That Sub C is a great watch. Always beautiful to look at. Iconic.

Do you get paranoid wearing it out and about?

I was very close in trading my Exp 2 for the latest non-date but then I figured I had too many divers (2 in total).
I also try not to collect 2 watches from the same brand - unless they're cheap like G Shocks.

Here is the Sub's cousin saying 'hi'

I have gone through and flipped about 5 Steinharts - their original Ocean Military Vintage was superb.
Real good quality for the money. Fun to wear.

There's a UK Seller called Chronomaster - Steinhart Watches | Chronomaster - who resells them. Good bloke.

Anyway, my next watch is in 10 years time.
Hopefully Rolex prices would have gone down by then.

What do you use to store your watches? I have a few now and the boxes they come in are bulky and impractical. I want some sort of nice case - any recommendations?

Have a look on Amazon, there are tonnes of watch cases with various sizes.

I have 2 x 12, and the 12 box is £16.99. :)

Another vote for Amazon, I have a 1 x 6 for mechanicals and 1 x 12 for quartz/ digitals.

Only thing is that watch boxes are a TERRIBLE idea if you're trying to control spending.
I hate having an empty slot in the box - makes me want to buy a watch.

What does everyone think of modern Seikos?
I have began the process of selling my 2nd gen green Sumo and possibly upgrading to the King Sumo grey gradient dial.

Only issue I have noticed is how expensive they are now.
Makes me wonder if I should look at something else (for example, an entirely different watch like the Longines Silver Arrow as a beater - the pricing isn't that different to the Sumo).

The newest King Sumos are a major step towards the dressy dive watch genre.
I'm not sure how I feel about this as, to me, Seiko divers have always been tool watches (similar to the old Rolex or Doxas).
While it's nice, shiny, and premium, it doesn't feel like a Sumo.

The bracelet is a massive improvement to the previous version, but I prefer it in a Crafter Blue.
Rubber = comfort.

Not really a lover of Seikos really despite having three of them, they don't really do much for me to be honest.

I've had a Seiko Alpinist (SARB017) for six or seven years now and I like it. It keeps good time, but had to go in for a service a couple of years ago when it was losing time (main dealer said "It's broken, needs a new movement for 200 quid"; I took it to an old watchmaker who serviced it for 100 and it's been fine since). I really don't like the Prospex model that has replaced it.

Which ones did you have?
My opinion of Seiko has changed over the years. I saw them as a mass-market consumer brand producing cheap throwaway watches - I had so many Seiko 5s that died on me, never bothered fixing them.
It was only until the late 2000s, I started collecting them, in particular the 6309s that I sold on Ebay. I thought they were fucking amazing. Then they did the PADI/ X resissues and I was hooked.
Yes, I know - their QC is appalling, and the 4/6Rxxx movements can be all over the place (my 3nd Gen Sumo was running +28 a day!! and this latest one has settled to -5 secs that I'm super proud with - yes its a lottery).

Then I have a Grand Seiko Snowflake.
Its the opposite of everything I thought about Seiko.

Its one of those watches that people ask "what is it?"
"Its a Grand SEIKO."

And then they lose interest.

I like that and to them, hearing the name SEIKO - they instantly assume its a shit and cheap watch.
That I don't mind.

Cos in reality the GS is the finest watch I have ever handled. The artistry and movement just blows me away.
You know that feeling of wearing a Rolex for the first time? I have it everytime I wear the GS.

That SARB is a keeper.
I wouldn't say no to the new rockface version.

Seikos.

The SKX007 was my first automatic.

Liked the green Recraft although it doesn't get worn much now.

The orange Seiko 5 diver because I liked the orange dial.

:)

Yeah, went through a stage of wearing those funky Recrafts, had a couple but couldn't find the SNKN73 in blue anywhere.

I think that time has passed for one now too. :(

Yeah, I do quite like the look of a Seiko 5 Military, but it was useless for telling time in anything better than a ~5 minute window of accuracy.

I have a particularly bad movement in my Stowa that needs a minute's adjustment once or twice a week. But for the S5 it would be 5 minutes' worth in the same time.

That time may return...

I once bought a Sportura SNAE67P1, got watch guilt and sold a shit load of pieces, including the Sportura - regretted it and been on the hunt for one ever since.
It was such a good chrono but I don't want to pay over £150 for a mint one :(

You have a Stowa Pilot or a Deck watch? I do like that brand but heard that some owners are unhappy with the ghost date window.

Love Stowa!
