Worst World Cup ever? Will get much better this week!

Posted this on another thread but didn't realise it was ruined already!

Loads and loads of people are saying this is the worst World Cup ever but I think it's been like this (lack of goals, defensive football) down to the way the fixtures worked out in this first round of games. I'm positive from now on we'll start seeing loads of decent games!

I think this World Cup's got of to a slow start with boring boring games because of the fixtures. The first week has put together the two favourites for qualification in each group in 6 of the 16 games (which means a further 6 has the two worst teams competing). Only Brazil - N Korea and Portugal - Ivory Coast haven't put the 'best' two and the 'worst' two together (imo of course!) so being the opening game there's a lot at stake should these teams lose. If England lost to America we'd be looking to finish second cos both America and England should easily beat Slovenia and Algeria. Same with the other groups. Teams have been really over cautious not wanting to lose their first match as opposed to wanting to win it. Same goes for the worst two teams - nobody wants to finish rock bottom with no points and there's always an outside chance of sneaking it (but not if they lose that first game which is their 'easiest' match)

Now we've got that first week out of the way (and the way the fixtures fell) I doubt we'll see the same cautious approach to the games and expect the goals to start being banged in!

And of course the vuvuzelas most probably have affected the quality of football so far too :p

i always felt this would happen, although i can't recall the opening group games being this cagey before.

a potential factor that i don't think's been mentioned is that the gap between teams is perceived to be less than it traditionally was. i'm desperately trying to avoid saying that there aren't really that many easy games in international football (i.e. the world cup) any more.

oh dear, i failed.

He does make that point:
David Bond said:
It's official - this is the most boring World Cup in history. A sweeping statement, I know, but according to statistics for the first round of group matches, there have been fewer goals scored at this stage of the competition than at any point in the last 80 years.

And it's not as if there are just one or two goals in it. Mexico 1986, the closest to South Africa 2010 in terms of goals scored, managed seven more after the first 16 games.

Now, I know that exciting football is not all about goals. Wednesday produced the sort of shock which makes this such a wonderful event, favourites Spain coming unstuck 1-0 against Switzerland.

not a lot of stories around for the hacks, so they have to generate their own shite narrative.

I know they get to see games and travel but it must be a soul destroying job writing space-filling drivel about things you know nothing about all the time.

I thought David Pleat and Jacqui Oatley (I think) were quite funny during the NZL v Slavakia match where for the most part they were scrabbling to find something to say!

Lack of goals doesn't mean boring.

aye, ive been enjoying this wc a lot - its got a unique atmosphere, a real sense of being a world competition, and the early games have all been interesting in their own way. its a long competition, and the first week is the first week. innit

Fuck the pompous involuntary celibates @ the Beeb. I love the way some cunt who probably exclusively covers nothing more than cricket thinks he can freely declare: "It's official - this is the most boring World Cup in history..."

Fuck off and get yourself some hemorrhoid creme you miserable dull fuck...

I've really enjoyed Brasil-DPRK, RSA-Uruguay and France-Mexico. Hopefully there will be less games missed as I couldn't watch any daytime ones.
